In the Nigerian society, Corporate Social Responsibilities [CSR] has been a highly cotemporary and contextual issue to all stakeholders including the government, the corporate organization itself, and the general public. The public contended that the payment of taxes and the fulfillment of other civic rights are enough grounds to have the liberty to take back from the society in terms of CSR undertaken by other stakeholders. Some ten year ago, what characterized the Nigerian society was fragrant pollution of the air, of the water and of the environment. Most corporate organizations are concerned about what they can take out of the society, and de-emphasized the need to give back to the society [their host communities]. This attitude often renders the entire community uninhabitable. A case in mind is the Niger Delta area of Nigeria. This translated to negative integrity and reputation on the part of corporate identity as people perceived this as exploitation and greed for profitability and wealth maximization within a decaying economy of Nigeria. However, the general belief is that both business and society gain when firms actively strive to be socially responsible; that is, the business organizations gain in enhanced reputation, while society gains from the social projects executed by the business organization. In modern day however, having seen the benefits and average favorable pay-back period of

The different aspects of corporate social responsibility (CSR) have been the topic of considerable debate since the last decades of the twentieth century. Main factor for the increased interest on the part of stakeholders in this topic are the increased public awareness and interest in the corporate social responsibility following the Information Revolution. This essay will assess the dangers and benefits of the business ethics for most of the stakeholders – employees, organizations, society, shareholders and the environment. It will also explore specific examples of corporate social responsibility in different large corporations and will make a comparison between two large companies’ ethical policies. The position that I will defend is that people behind corporations are the ones who can be philanthropic but enterprises themselves can only be driven by the laws of market (which in the modern economic reality in most Western countries demands an increasing attention to business ethics).…

Nigeria is a developing country that is abundantly rich in many natural resources and as a result has a good number of multinational corporations ranging from oil companies, banks to consulting firms. Unfortunately, CSR is a concept that I personally believe the government has left to expectations, believing the multinational corporations would do what is ‘right’ by offering certain benefits to the society and the environment. As a result of this approach, Corporate and social responsibility has become a forgotten issue thus not playing a vital role in Nigeria as it does in some African countries and the developed world. Both the government and the corporations are happy to maintain that status quo and go on with business as usual.…

The Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) movement has assembled great thrust over the ancient integer of ages and today CSR is surfacing gradually and gaining its acceptance by businesses across the world. For being reason CSR is one of the most conversed topics to the government, by nongovernment and by business itself. The old proverb, “Everybody talks about society, but nobody does anything about it” is not valid in this century because Almona, C. P. (2005) alleged that the role of business worldwide and specifically in the developed economies has evolved over the last few decades from classical ‘profit maximizing’ approach to a social responsibly approach, where businesses are not only responsible to its stockholders but also to all of its stakeholders in a broader inclusive sense. One can identify so many reasons for shifting the role of business from classical concept to a responsible business concept, but negative impression of stakeholders on the enterprise would get a higher priority among others. In one hand, enterprises create wealth and job opportunities for the society and on the other; they pollute and destroy environment and ecology with devastating impact on human health and biodiversity worldwide [1]. As earlier the researchers said that CSR practices are found in government, non-government and business sectors. Now the banking sectors are not out of the area of business world because it has direct or indirect relationship to the government, non-government and business sectors. The banking sector of Bangladesh involves of private commercial banks, public commercial banks and specialized banks. Where there are more than fifty six commercial banks; dominating Bangladesh’s financial sectors. To get this competitive advantage from their rival, CSR is one of the main instruments. CSR is now considered as an integral…

Abstract In contemporary enterprise and organisational culture, many companies are increasingly willing to increase their profits and to gain competitive advantages through indulgence in bribery, corruption, money laundering and other anti-social practices that shows little regard for social obligations and even laws. Companies cemented their social relations by claims of socially responsible and of ethical conduct, but the evidence in practice proves otherwise. The bourgeoning corporate social responsibility literature rarely examines predatory practices of MNCs even though the practices affect a variety of stakeholders. This paper draws attention to the gaps between corporate anti-corruption policy and acts. The paper used publicly available evidence to provide case studies to show that companies engaged in bribery, corruption and money laundering as against their claims of responsible social conduct. The paper argued that MNCs have used the political elite in developing countries to seek to advance their global earnings and competitive advantages by offering bribes and other inducements to secure government contracts in Nigeria. It also encourages reflections on endemic corrupt practices and offers some suggestions for reform.…

Corporate social responsibility originated in the eighteenth century when Scottish moral philosopher and pioneer of political economics Adam Smith expressed that the needs and desires of society could best be met by the free interaction of individuals and organizations in the marketplace. Then the Wealth of Nations further noted that, “It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard for their own interest. Milton Friedman, Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics recipient, replied by stating in a 1970’s The New York Times Magazine article, that “the one and only social responsibility of business, is to increase profits for shareholders. ” As a result these efforts laid the foundations of CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY. So what exactly is corporate social responsibility? According to The Legal Environment of Business by Cross and Miller text book, corporate social responsibility is the idea that those who run corporations can and should act ethically and be accountable to society for their actions . But there have been many legal cases that challenge corporate social responsibility. Therefore, the ongoing debate of CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY raises the question as to whether CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY is actually beneficial toward businesses or not. Through the debate over both perspectives from corporations, CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY’s impact in the business world will be examined in the spectrum of its ethical, financial, legal, and philanthropic standings, redesigned to meet new purposes in the 21st Century corporate setting.…
