An Analysis Of Odysseus In Homer's Odyssey '
Odysseus was a very arrogant man, he wanted people to know, Odysseus was in town. I believe that this even went into his own personal life. While at the war at Troy and on his adventure back, Penelope was having to keep suitors off her back. Once odysseus comes home, he is mad that they would do that kind of thing to him. Odysseus kills all of the suitors. He had a right to kill them, although there is always 2 or more ways to do or say something, and he could have handled it more humanly. When you think about all that the suitors did to Odysseus, like raping the maids, or drinking and destroying his home. Attempting to marry his wife, and was going to kill his son. Not to mention not being nice or hospitable Odysseus, or as they knew, a beggar.

I think that if Telemachus was a good leader and took care of the suitors, Odysseus wouldn’t make his dining hall into a bloodbath. But because he didn’t take care of the suitor problem, Penelope was bribed by suitors to marry them. And maids of Odysseus slept with other suitors. The suitors who died from Odysseus deserved to die from Odysseus because not only did they try to marry Penelope they also planned to kill Odysseus and Telemachus as well. And for the maids, they also deserved to die because they were not loyal to not only penelope but Odysseus as well, because they were with the idea of suitors killing odysseus.…

Malala Yousafzai said, “We were scared, but our fear was not as strong as our courage.” To some people, courage is seen in everyday acts of bravery. When a person does what seems to be a brave act during a calamity, without proper training, it is not bravery. It. Is. Courage. Courage is doing something that is dangerous and noble, but not irrational. It should also make you a better person, or the world a better place.…

How does one change from a narcissistic creature to one that is patient and caring? That is a question we must ponder as we dwell into the mind of Odysseus, the hero of the epic, the Odyssey. Odysseus is a king lost for twenty years after the Trojan War, used to putting up a fight when it comes to surviving a new land. Imposing his authority over his crew, Odysseus demands “I alone should listen to their song... We must obey the orders as I give them” (lines 727-780). This shows how Odysseus uses his power to manipulate his shipmates into supporting his selfish decisions. After more ill-advised decisions that end up killing all of his shipmates, Odysseus is proclaimed to be a “patient hero” (lines 1328-1331). A fantastic example of dramatic…

The gods have played their part altering the course of the hero’s voyage. Seemingly, in the epic harmony does not last long and challenges follow Odysseus like a plague. Calypso, the audience believes holds the last installment of the global journey, our hero has yet more battles ahead of him. In fact, the king of Ithaca wandered the Mediterranean and its coastal lands for 10 years before finally arriving home. As waves crash against the raft, “he was seen sailing the ocean”(284). In The Odyssey, Homer uses Odysseus’s journey to show how ones journey can change them as a person. He had many temptations but his main goal was to get home. His killing of the men has to do with the disrespectful way that they have been treating his wife, home, and personal belongings while he was away. The suitors had brought a large amount of dishonor to Odysseus’ house and he wanted to re-gain that honor. Odysseus had spoken to the suitors when he returned and said, "...because of that you despoiled my household, and forcibly took my serving women to sleep beside you, and sought to win my wife while I was still alive,... Now upon you all the terms of destruction are fastened (book 22)." Penelope had challenged the hundreds of men to a task that she knew only Odysseus could complete. The task was to shoot an arrow through twelve axe heads. Many men tried but did not succeed. Only Odysseus completed the task. Penelope then knew it was her beloved and that’s when Odysseus rightfully took his place back on his…

On the subject of heroism, Maya Angelou once wrote that “I think a hero is any person really intent on making this a better place for all people” (Angelou). The general picture that comes to mind when the word “hero” is said is the idea of Superman or Wonder Woman; however, a true hero is anyone who tries to make their world a better place. Odysseus, the hero in Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, fought in the Trojan War and embarked on a ten year journey to return to his kingdom, Ithaca. During his quest to return home, he encounters many supernatural forces that show both his heroic, and not so heroic actions. He faces countless challenges, meets new people, and has to make sacrifices for the overall benefit of his crew (Bowler and Homer 645-705).…
