An Analysis Of Love Poem With Toast
In the poem “Love Poem With Toast”, Miller Williams uses imagery to illustrate the complex relationship between two characters. Starting off in the very first stanza, William writes a very bland line, “Some of what we do, we do to make things happen,” making this line seem lifeless and distasteful. It’s later accompanied by the lines “the alarm to wake us up, the coffee to perc, the car to start.” This helps support the very first line in showing the reader that their lives are very routine-based and boring. Every day they wake up at the same time, they sit at breakfast drinking the same coffee, and then head to work. This helps the reader come to the conclusion that they don’t really look forward to anything exciting every time they come across a new day. When reading the second stanza, the line “trying to keep something from doing something, the skin from aging, the hoe from rusting” helps the reader better illustrate the kind of couple these characters are, in this case they’re a much older pair. When the years pass and we grow older, our hair starts to turn white and our skin begins to wrinkle. The metal on wire fences don’t always stay shiny and new, through time and many weather changes the surface starts to rust and turn an autumn red.
