An Analysis Of Katherine Paterson's Lyddie
Sometimes making difficult decisions can have lots of bad things and responsibility but behind all those things it could change your life in good ways. The fictional novel Lyddie, by Katherine Paterson is about this girl whos family has a debt on their farm and she has to find a job to pay it off. Lyddie finds a job but the conditions in the job as a factory girl are terrible. Lyddie doesn’t quit only because she needs the money to help her family and herself. Lyddie has to survive through these tough working times. Lyddie should sign the petition that Diana Goss is circulating.
If Lyddie signs the petition maybe there won’t be as many injuries from the machines. Lyddie didn't think she would be one of the people getting an injury, but the machines aren't safe and they can hurt anyone who comes across the machines. “Before she could think she was on the floor, blood pouring through her hair near her right temple… the shuttle...” The machines are so dangerous that they almost costed Lyddie her life. People should be able to work without worrying about if their going to end up in the hospital or die. Another problem is the dust in the factories are unhealthy for people to be breathing in. “Betsy, I do wish you’d see Dr. Morris about that cough...” It may not sound bad but a cough can lead to many bad things. Betsy’s cough is from the dust from the factory going inside her lungs and making it hard for her to breath. It’s hard to watch someone go through a slow and painful illness. …show more content…
These are only some reasons why Lyddie should sign the petition but there are also many more. The hours of work for the girls and Lyddie take away their free time and energy and the safety issues cause people their lives and terrible injuries. Besides those there is still lack of respect for these girls unless they are very good at what they do. Lyddie should sign the petition and help herself and her friends in the
