Vincente Minnelli

“An American in Paris” is about an American man named Jerry Mulligan living in Paris with his friend Adam Cook. The two are in need of jobs. Jerry is an artist who comes across a wealthy woman named Milo Roberts, who takes interest, in not only his art work, but in Jerry himself. Through Milo, out of coincidence, Jerry sees and meets Lice Bouvier and his feelings spark for her, creating a love triangle. When Jerry decides he wants to marry Lice, Adam learns about a conflict and another love triangle forms. Both of his friends love one woman. Henri Baurel, being that other man, is set on marrying Lice. Lice then must explain to Jerry that she has to marry Henri. Once Jerry’s feelings are broken he turns to Milo and they go to a New Year’s party. Here Milo and Henri find out that Jerry loves Lice and that they are getting married as soon as they get to America. The film ends after Lice returns moments after leaving to be with Jerry.

Jerry who is the main character of this film started the narration. The audience first learns a little bit about the characters; Jerry, Adam and Henri. The audience gets up close to the characters personally. Jerry is a talented artist who can not only paint, but tap-dance and sing. Adam, and also a friend of Jerry’s, is a pianist who dreams of participating in a concert and Henri, who is a good friend of Adam’s, is a wealthy man who host’s musical concerts. When thinking about the city of New Orleans, Louisiana, one may think of the opulent Garden District homes or the historic cemeteries where the dead are buried in above-ground mausoleums to avoid the below-sea-level ground conditions. But for most people, the thought of the Crescent City evokes images of the debauchery of Bourbon Street or the jazz musicians in Jackson Square: collectively, the French Quarter. In his book Madame Vieux Carré: The French Quarter in the Twentieth Century, Scott Ellis takes the reader on a journey through the French Quarter from its beginnings as the first settlement of what we now know as New Orleans to the beginnings of the 21st century.…

From the end of the Civil War until the turn of the century there were many changes in American society. While some may see these changes as all beneficial, others will argue that the changes made in American society from 1865 to 1910 were mainly detrimental. When we talk about history, its difficult to say if it was good or bad. Throughout history some groups of people have benefited, while others were harmed. Not everyone can prosper from the same event; there will always be winners and losers.…

The question that I want to address for my historical paper is: How did African Americans help fight on both sides during the Civil War? To find out how the African Americans fought against and for the Union, also known as the North, first you must scrutinize the reason why African Americans got involved in the Civil War in the first place. The reason why most African Americans fought in the Civil War was to have the opportunity to fight oppression and end slavery nationally. Black soldiers served in artillery and infantry and performed all noncombat support functions that sustain an army, as well. Black carpenters, chaplains, cooks, guards, laborers, nurses, scouts, spies, steamboat pilots, surgeons, and teamsters also contributed to the war cause.…

The story of a loner who was selfishly looking to make money pitted two ?gangs? against each other while he played the middle. This is a personification of the United States at the time of the conflict. The country was involved in a conflict across the sea between two warring nations in the hopes of winning and gaining something of value for the country or the government. The movie was a mirror into what Europeans and specifically Italian filmmakers such as Leone though of Americans, depicting them as selfish manipulators who only were interested in making money and our own selfish gains. However, he also recognized the audience?s wishes for a hero. ?Joe? may not have been the typical hero from past westerns. He did have decency for the innocents. He was out for himself at first in order to make money off the turmoil in the town, but he did have good qualities such as aiding in the release of Marisol and her…

Recently, a lot of negative light has been shed on the Muslim community due to extremist Islamic groups inflicting terrorism upon various different countries around the world. Extreme groups like ISIS and Al-Qaeda commit terrible acts like 9/11, the London bombing, the Paris attacks, and many more. These actions bring hate and prejudice to the peaceful religion of Islam. This racism has brought discrimination to the Muslim community from all over the world. I plan to apply the sociological theories of Erving Goffman and W.E.B. Du bois to better understand the anti-Islamic racism going on around the world and its effects on society.…

Part one: The author imagines himself an Englishman who has come to settle in America (in 1783). Through the eyes of this English settler, the author describes what he would see upon coming to America and how different it would be from Europe. Unlike in Europe, America has a far smaller gap between rich and poor and titles, based on class and honor, (such as prince, duke or lord) are non-existent. For the most part the people living in America are farmers and live in comfortable but modest houses. It is clear from the author’s words that he thinks America is great place to live.…

"The general advantages which Europe, considered as one great country, has derived from the discovery and colonization of America, consist, first, in the increase of its enjoyments; and, secondly, in the augmentation of its industry." (Page 2, Voices of Freedom) The production in America was considered a surplus to Europe, as it gave them a variety of commodities they otherwise may not have possessed. The countries that had trade with America saw their economy boosted.
