Abstract:

Attacks by viruses and bacteria are often serious and sometimes fatal. Yet, in many cases, the host survives and regains its health. This is because of the presence of antibody and lymphocyte in the blood of an individual that neutralize and attack foreign objects that can cause certain diseases like cancer. In order for us to produce large amounts of antibodies and lymphocytes to suppress foreign objects; we must have an enhanced immune system. The researcher investigated on how to increase the antibody and lymphocyte count to have protection against infectious diseases.

Agaricus birporus, commonly known while button mushroom which is edible and was traced to invigorate one’s immune system because of the presence of beta-glucan, a polysaccharide that is rich in nutrients like riboflavin, niacin, and B vitamins which help in stimulating the immune system.

The problem of this study is to determine the ability of beta-glucan from Agricus bisporus for the increase in antibody and lymphocyte count of Canis familiaris subjects. The researcher extracted beta- glucan Agaricus bisporus through the process of centrifugation. The experimental design employed in this study is the Completely Randomized Design (CRD) required eight Canis familiaris subjects. Beta-glucan from Agaricus bisporus was fed to four Canis Familiaris subjects, while the other four subjects of which did not intake beta-glucan from Agaricus bisporus. T-test was employed in comparing antibody and lymphocyte count from the two treatments: treatment A where blood samples were extracted from the subjects that ingested the beta-glucan from Agaricus bisporus.

After the antibody or CD4 count, the test revealed a mean count of 2778 and 2820 for the first and second replicated respectively for treatment A. For treatment B, mean count of 1172.5 for the first replicate and 1159.5 for the second replicate was obtained. After the lymphocyte count test, a mean count of 3081 for the first replicate
