Amerigo Vespucci
Amerigo Vespucci was born on March 9,1454, who grew up in a mansion, which was located near a river. His family was very wealthy and considered to be very religious and well respected. His parents were Stagio and Elisabetta Vespucci. Amerigo was the third son to be born into the family. Amerigo had two older brothers, whose names were Antonio and Girolamo, and a younger brother whose name was Bernado. As a young boy, Amerigo’s happiest moments were studying the stars. He was very good at mathematics and his hobby were copying maps. As a young boy, Amerigo’s dream was to travel and get a better picture, of what the Earth looked like. Amerigo’s Uncle, Giorgio Antonio Vespucci, taught Amerigo many different, and knowledgeable things. About a year before Amerigo was born, Giorgio opened up a school, and as soon Amerigo met the appropriate age to go to school, he did right away. Amerigo’s uncle, taught him physical science, especially Aristotle and Ptolemy, which included astronomy, cosmography, and geography. The teachings of Amerigo’s uncle would later on help Amerigo with his career, which was based on his voyages. The country Amerigo explored for was Spain. In 1491-1492, he worked in Seville, Spain, for the Medici family, where he learned about the voyages of exploration and also about the men who were searching for the Northwest passage to the Indies. In 1497, he was granted permission on a voyage of discovery by King Ferdinand of Spain. That was the first voyage of Amerigo Vespucci. Amerigo Vespucci decided to explore, because he wanted to find the Northwest passage to the Indies, which was why he was granted permission, and he was also good at math, and at reading maps. Amerigo did many ca lculations that really improved how people navigated with ships. One of these calculations was the circumference of the Earth, but he missed it by only 50 miles. His first journey landed him along the Coast of South America, but still thought that he was in Asia. Amerigo
