Magic Ketchup Experiment

Introduction: This experiment is all about buoyancy and density. Buoyancy describes whether objects float or sink. Usually describes how things float or sink in different gasses. Density deals with the amount of mass an object has. Adding salt to the water adjusted the water. Squeeze the bottle hard enough, putting pressure to the packet. This causes the bubbles to get smaller and the entire packet to become more dense.
Objective: The objective of this experiment is to find the density and buoyancy which is an upward force exerted by a fluid.
Hypothesis: Think that all the packages are going to float and when squeezed, the package elevates more.
It will sink as you add more salt
Materials:
A 1 liter plastic bottle
A ketchup pack from a fast food restaurant.
Salt(using Kosher salt helps keep the water becoming foggy.)
Procedures:
1. Any labels from the bottle needs to be removed and fill it all the way to the top with water.
2. A ketchup pack is added to the bottle.
3. If the ketchup floats, go to step 4. If the ketchup sinks in the bottle, go to step 5.
4. For the floating ketchup pack simply screw the cap on the bottle and squeeze the sides of the bottle hard. If the ketchup sinks when it is squeezed , and floats when you release it, its ready to show it off. If it does not sink when they squeeze it, try a different kind of ketchup pack or try a mustard or soy sauce pack.
5. If the ketchup pack sinks, add about 3 tablespoons (45 ml) of salt to the bottle. Cap it and shake it up until the salt dissolves. (Kosher salt will keep the water from getting too cloudy, although it will usually clear up over time if using regular table salt.)
6. Salt is added, a few tablespoons at a time until the ketchup is just barely floating to the top of the bottle.
7. Once it is consistently floating, make sure the bottle is filled to the top with water, and

First, I found two 1litre bottles and marked one with ‘+ salt’ and the other with ‘fresh’. I then went on to add red food colouring to the fresh bottle and yellow to the + salt bottle. The reason for doing so was to establish which ones were which and see if they will successfully float on one another. Secondly, I put 25 tsp of salt into the + salt bottle to improve the density of it (as I was told it would help.) Finally I put the fresh bottle on top of the + salt, making sure I didn’t spill too much in the process.…

In this experiment, the experimenters found the density of solid objects and then the concentrations of solutions based on their densities. It was determined that as density increases, concentration does as well. The density of a substance is something that stays constant, for solutions of material the density is expected to increase in direct translation to the concentration increasing. The theory surrounding this lab was to see in practice how density could be determined with displacement and then to determine whether the density does in fact increase directly with the concentration.…

My name is Madison Johnson. I am in the 9th grade. I am in Mrs. Logan’s biology class. I am doing my project on “The Magic Floating Egg”. Eggs sink in normal tap water and I am testing whether or not changing the density of water will make the egg float. I was looking at projects on sciencebuddies.org and I saw that multiple people had done this. I am trying to prove that when you add a certain amount of salt to water, it will make it more dense. I took pictures of the results. This information can be useful because we can test the density of salt water versus the density of normal tap water..…

Step 3: The remaining materials are aluminum soda cans and soda bottles. The next step involves the concentrated sugar water, which has a density of 1.5 grams per cubic centimeter. The aluminum soda cans and soda bottles are placed into the concentrated sugar water. The soda bottles should float because they are less dense than the concentrated sugar water. Soda bottles are 1.4 grams per cubic centimeter. The aluminum soda cans have a density of 2.7 grams per cubic centimeter which means they sink in the concentrated sugar water. The workers then skim out the soda bottles on the top of the concentrated sugar water and separate them from the aluminum soda cans in the bottom of the concentrated sugar water.…

Research: Internet research shows that adding salt to water increases the density, and in turn makes it easier for objects to float. 4-10 teaspoons of salt in 1 glass of water is said to be enough to make one egg float (depending on the size of the glass). Multiple sources confirm this answer. Researching the topic also provides reasons as to why an object may float in water with higher density.…
