Romanticism When most people hear someone say romanticism they think about flowers and love, but the American Romantic Period isn’t about that at all. The American Romantic Period was a period in American history where the authors and poets changed their writing style to focus more on spirituality and individualism. This time period stretched from the year 1790 to the year 1860. Three big historical events that took place during this time period were the industrial revolution, Louisiana Purchase, and the war of 1812. The industrial revolution was an influence because a lot of people were immigrating to the US and causing people to move west and into the country. Imagination is when someone comes up with his or her own ideas. “Imagination is the only weapon in the war against reality.” (Carroll). This quote shows that imagination is a way to escape the pressures of reality. Escapism is when someone is trying to seek a distraction from something. “I want to give up my bearings, slip out of who I am, shed everything, the way a snake discards old skin.” (Hosseini). This quote is saying that the author wants to find an escape from his situation. A romantic author that has the qualities of imagination and escapism is Edgar Allan Poe. The article “Edgar Allan Poe: biography” says, “His imaginative storytelling led to literary innovations, earning him the nickname father of the detective story.” The article “Edgar Allan Poe: Biography” also says “Poe, who continued to struggle living in poverty, got a break when one of his short stories won a contest in the Baltimore Saturday Vister.” These two quotes talk about how he used his imagination to become the well-known author and poet he is. The second quote talks about he was in poverty but he still managed to write and to when a contest. Someone in todays culture that shows the characteristics of imagination and escapism is Tim Burton. Tim Burton uses his imagination to come up with unique stories, and very unique and recognizable
