The American Identity

The American identity has been a roller coaster, it has many ups and downs and it seems to have been going downhill for quite some time. America is not the way it used to be. Our country was rough in the beginning great in the middle and now it is becoming pretty bad again. When the pilgrims first came to America they were looking for freedom from the King of England. The so-called “first settlers” of America were not the real first settlers. This piece of land was already inhabited by Indians. These People did not like the Native Americans. The values we embrace as Americans are Freedom and Liberty. The people who first found this country took Freedom and Liberty from the Native Americans. All the things settlers …show more content…
The more people who came to America the more slaves did as well. Slaves were all coming from countries in Africa and being enslaved in America. White slave owners in this country thought of slaves as if they were not even people. African Americans had it way worse than Native Americans they truly had no freedom. Years went by and people in the North became to realize how bad slavery truly was. Many Northern states made slavery a crime but in the south slavery was the way of life. When Abraham Lincoln was elected as president it led to a civil war due to the fear of slavery becoming everywhere, states started leaving the country this was known as seceding, many southern states did this and a civil war between the North and South. The war went on for a long time, after the grueling battle of Gettysburg. After this battle Abraham Lincoln gave a speech about the lives lost in the battle of Gettysburg. This speech by Abraham Lincoln was called the Gettysburg Address. In the Gettysburg Address, Abraham Lincoln stated, “In a larger sense, we can not dedicate -- we can not consecrate -- we can not hallow -- this ground. (Abraham Lincoln)” The war ended, soon after that Abraham was assassinated at Ford’s theater. After the Civil War, African Americans were still segregated and mistreated by white …show more content…
America was built because people wanted freedom and liberty. People in this country deserve freedom and liberty and not everyone in this country gets those two things. The American Identity is one of a kind and us as a nation need to come together and change that. Come together to make liberty a reality for all

    As the author mentioned, American national identity is as unique as being American itself.
