In the short story named “American History” the main character's name is Elena. Elena’s family was from Puerto Rico and she would often get made fun of for being black and skinny. Elena also started crushing on the guy that lived next to her and would stalk him through her window. His name was Eugene. Eugene and Elena be’hickcame friends. When they were together at school, kids would call them “skinny bones” and the “hick”. The day that Eugene invited Elena to his house to study, president Kennedy died. Her mom suggested that she stayed home to show some respect for him, but Elena still decided to go to his house.
