Questions Within Our Eyes A man of many years dressed in nineteenth century clothing is shown standing with a much younger woman. The three most common questions most people would ask are, “Who are the man and women in the painting?” also “What’s the relationship between the young woman and the gentleman?” and last “What does their life portray?” The man in the painting is a town dentist from Wood’s hometown and the woman is Wood’s sister, Nan. Many characteristics about this painting are unique and questionable. This painting will allow viewers to expand their imagination. The American Gothic painted by Grant Wood in August of 1930 demonstrates expressionism used in the man and woman’s face, the house shown in the background, and the way of life they portray.
When looking at this painting, we see a man and woman carrying the same non-expressive facial expression. As the man is starring directly at the viewer, his expression in his eyes show he is stern. As opposed to the woman, she is not looking directly at the viewer but somewhere off the distance to the left. She appears to be furrowing her eyebrows when looking in the distance, presenting herself as distracted, uninterested, or annoyed. In the early nineteenth century, having to paint a picture consumed a great amount of time; therefore they kept a neutral face to make it easier on themselves and for the artists as well. Their neutral expressions can also be taken as an expression of the great depression and the hardships on the farms during the time period. The mans demeanor and the woman’s disturbed expression leads to the explanation that although their farm is in trouble, they are willing to face what is to come in the hardships.
Besides the expression given from both the man and woman, the house is another main focus to the painting. The design of the house is based on an American Gothic style, hence the title of the painting.

There are three men in the painting. The men are at ease and are almost lost in the painting. The men do not seem distinct from their surroundings but rather just another natural element in the bigger picture. The men are in poses that do not suggest positions that can be held for long periods of time, but rather only a moment. The men appear to be marveling at their surroundings as they look out into the vast wilderness. Above them, and hidden behind trees, there is a building. Just like the men, the nature and trees overwhelm the structure itself, clearly defining the more important and powerful of the two.…

You have a dog that is growling, this indicates that it is afraid and is showing aggression, something that is not all supposed to be happy, but it is made to look like it is smiling by turning the painting upside down. The dog is supposed to represent humans, and it shows how we are sometimes in a situation of discomfort, anger, or pain and yet we are made to smile and act like everything is fine against our will. This is due to pressure about keeping up appearances, or just not being able to share your feelings with others because of receiving backlash from them, we see how people care so much about not appearing weak, or being an emotional inconvenience on others that we just pretend that everything is fine when it’s…

Flannery O’Connor was one of the most known authors for writing southern gothic short stories. Southern gothic became a style of writing in the wake of the civil war and brought up questions in society like, ‘Why is violence such a large part of the south’s culture?’ and, ‘How did the South have such a hard time picking itself up after its defeat in the war?’ Southern gothic is usually decayed, grotesque, or derelict settings and situations and had themes of ambivalent gender roles, poverty, alienation, crime or violence. Wyeth grew up visiting Maine during his summers, where he met his wife Betsy Wyeth. It was from her that Wyeth would be introduced to the Olson family, specifically spending time with siblings Christina and Alvaro Olson. Through the years, many paintings of the Olson’s were worked on, but it was his captivating paintings of Christina Olson that would allow him to be recognized as not just another American artist. This is one of the many paintings showing Christina Olson, also being one of his later paintings during his life. The painting depicts her sitting on a chair, resting with a kitten on her chest while she sleeps. The darkness is self-evident, providing a setting to compliment the sadness that seems to be shown. With this painting, Wyeth is able to show a deeper meaning behind it, the state of Christina Olson herself, and the emotions the artist felt during the time.…

As she was born, she bore death. The child came in the recesses of a dull and barren winter, on a night that had been so cold that it felt hollow, like a jagged hole bitten out of the earth. The queen mother had died just hours after the birth—a fever, so they claimed, no doubt brought on by the miserable chill of the season. The sickness quickly spread to the other wet-nurses and servants—she passed from hand to hand in a succession of fleeting maternity, leaving her swaddled in mourning clothes. They preferred to keep the child covered, for even a fleeting glance of her chilled milk-white skin and blood stained lips created a deathly shiver.…

This painting shows the energy and positive attitudes of the people through the use of vibrant colors and the happy expressions of the faces. The people in this picture have features that were comparable to the minstrel characters (Wikipedia, 26 July 2013) often depicting Black face. Many have very dark skin with big white eyes and teeth, and are all smiles. All of the people are dressed nicely in dresses for the women and girls, top hats and slacks for the men and boys. It is safe to assume that the people in the picture had just came from church, because in the background you clearly see the church and a handful of people walking out as well as a carload of people driving off.…

I believe this painting shows a loss of identity. This is the reason I chose this as my favorite piece of art, because I can relate to it. There came a time in my life where I was struggling with my own identity. In today's world it is very significant to identify oneself with at least one thing (ones ethnicity, nationality, race, religion, or a particular belief). Many people still grapple with the notion of identity in many countries, regions, and various ways in order to fit or adapt into any environment (social, economic, cultural, political, etc). One’s identity determines ones position or situation in society wherever one lives. However, finding the right type of…
