The American Dream is a Fantasy
The American Dream is owning a car, a home, a piece of land, and having free time to enjoy life. The American Dream is an egalitarian principle, it is the principle that all people are equal and deserve equal rights and opportunities. I believe that the American Dream is not a realistic possibility for the average American with things like minimum wage standing in their way.
Many people are asserting that the American Dream is an unrealistic goal for the average American. In 2004, Barack Obama, as an Illinois state senator, gave a speech at the Democratic National Convention. It was obvious he was optimistic about the American Dream when he said “But my grandfather had larger dreams for his son. Through hard work and perseverance my father got a scholarship to study in a magical place; America which stood as a beacon of freedom and opportunity to so many who had come before.” Dickler would agree with Obama. As Andrew Soergel said “The average Saudi household would only need to see monthly salaries climb by about $74 to realize the American dream in their own country, while U.S. workers would need hundreds upon hundreds of dollars in additional income.” This quote shows how low the minimum wage is in America compared to the cost of living. Robert Reich said ““Taxes have been cut on the rich, public schools have deteriorated, higher education has become unaffordable for many, safety nets have been shredded, and the minimum wage has been allowed to drop 30 percent below where it was in 1968, adjusted for inflation.” This quote also shows how bad the minimum wage is in America.
In conclusion I believe that the American Dream is slipping away from too many Americans. By the time I am 25 (8 years from now), I would like to achieve the American dream. I want to have a car, a house, a piece of land, my own business, and to have extra money for luxury items. I would also like to have my weekends off, and live debt free.
