Ambiguity In Social Work
I moved to Copenhagen 1.5 years ago, and I knew it was going to be a time of transition and adaptation. When my Masters in Social Work and therapy licenses weren’t reciprocated fully, I chose to dive head first into web development. I decided to make things happen rather than to wait for them to happen.

Timing is important in decision making, but acting decisively despite uncertainty and ambiguity is also necessary. We live politically, economically, and technologically uncertain time. This is what makes the increasing of understanding between groups and individual so crucial, and in turn necessitates the existence of products like Babbel.

Connection and understanding of ourselves and others are things I care deeply about. They are two things

I wanted to bring to your attention some issues that I had about a professor in the school of social work, J. Breezer Rickey. I had her for SOWK 370 this fall. As a social worker, I feel that her sense of empathy for her students is not present in her daily interactions with students. She has made several rude comments to me (which I have attached as a PDF to this email), and those comments have made my self-esteem go down a considerable amount. A social worker should life people up, not bring them down, as is the situation here.…

This essay will identify a case I have been involved in and have continuously had to assess whilst on placement. It will refer to a child who will be identified as A. A is a young carer and has only recently returned home after being removed from his mothers care due to her having a substance abuse problem and mental health concerns. I will link the legal framework that was relevant to this case study and describe actions taken. Additionally these actions will demonstrate the application of social work methods and theories that were contributive elements in his intervention, offering explanations as to why these particular methods were used. Before closing, the essay will review any issues of discrimination with a reflection of the overall process of working with this child throughout the duration of my placement and end with a conclusion.…

Karen has demonstrated her depth of understanding Social Work theory and her talent for applying its practice. Karen was able to recognize the situation and view it with a socialist perspective. The initial information of two small children wandering around at night alone, pulls at our heart strings and exposes our bias. These biases make us susceptible to formulating rash knee jerk reactions of condemnation.…

I also would love to be able to assist my clients in designing a personal social action plan. I agree there are many injustices in the world and I would like to be there as a source of support for my clients overall. I imagine that it would be quite difficult, but that I could help advocate for those who need it the most. Advocacy work seems to be a less known part of working as a counselor. We all need to get more actively involved with these issues because it is in our best interest to ensure that are clients are receiving the best care possible, including advocating for their needs as a profession. Some counselors are more involved than others, but nonetheless it is a very important part of the helping field overall. As you mentioned,…

The difficult part was the service users that I worked with had their own diverse values and that is where I experienced some tensions and dilemmas as to what was the right thing to be doing came up. Different people had different views on what creates risk. In my position as a Social Worker it needs the ability to identify and balance values of benefits and harms, taking into consideration where one’s own value base impacts on the decision making and where we can support people to achieve the best outcomes, using professional rather than personal values. However we are guided by the purpose of the organisation we are employed in, as well as the legal and policy parameters of our society. Additionally, it would appear that the focus of social…

A situation where I had an ethical conflict with a client is when there was a client who wanted to have an abortion. I was completing a house visit with an assigned social worker and I had to conduct the meeting. The client felt that she did not want a baby due to her age. I do not believe in abortion unless it is caught early on due to a form of sexual assault. However, I could not enforce my beliefs on the client. I had to rightfully inform the client of her options and what the decision could entail. When I explained the options to the client I did so because it was her choice to make. I assisted her and wanted to do so unbiasedly because I wanted the client to make the decision that would long-termly benefit her in the best possible way. I weighed the options of how if I did shared my beliefs with her it could have made her feel ashamed, angry, etc. That was not my place to create this type of atmosphere. The client took in the information I…

I had experienced cognitive dissonance at my previous employer. I worked for an agency contracted with The Department of Human Services in MEmphis. I worked as an employment specialist. As a work contractor, I was paid with federal dollars so I had to policy filled and “by the book”. I was responsible for the monitoring of clients mandatory work activities. If the clients were compliant, they would receive transportation each week, in the form of a bus pass or gas card. I was the person of contact for those who were absent, this particular day. I met with a client who did not complete her activity for the week. Per the policy, transportation was denied as she was non-compliant. Client had a legitimate excuse for her non-compliance however,…
