Using the themes we have examined in this course discuss the situation of the children in Jonathan Kozol's Amazing Grace. Who defines them as 'other'? How? What makes them feel like 'nobodies'? What makes them feel like 'somebodies'? What is the role of religion in this daily struggle for human dignity?

Drugs, violence, prostitution, pollution, infestation, and sickness of all kinds are present in South Bronx, New York. Unfortunately, children are surrounded and involved in all these problems and more. In Jonathan Kozol’s novel Amazing Grace, an evil reality full of racial segregation and alienation affect the people living in the ghetto. The personalities of these children are changed forever due to the existence of discrimination.

When people from the South Bronx neighbourhood go to stores, hospitals, or churches outside of their own area, there is a sense of rejection. “They’re right. I don’t belong in a nice hospital. My skin is black. I’m Puerto Rican. I’m on welfare. I belong in my own neighbourhood. This is where I’m supposed to be.” (Kozol, 176) This is the common reality that plagues the adults. Consequently, a society that discriminates against people due to their skin colour and status contributes to the negative way these children think. If the adults are having a difficult time dealing with the issues already, what possibly could be on the minds of their children? Majority of the children believe they do not fit the social norms of the American society and therefore are treated like outcasts. The poverty-stricken children discuss with Kozol the reasons why they feel this way. “If you go downtown to a nice store, they look at you sometimes as if your body is disgusting. You can be dressed in your best dress but you feel you are not welcome.” (Kozol, 41) The sixteen year old girl Maria believes this is how people of the ghetto are viewed; they are viewed dirty, hopeless, unwanted and different.     During his first visit Sister Julia stated that the new school was sinking because of the roof was too heavy. According to the Post-Dispatch, Martin Luther King Junior High had been evacuated for the second time in the spring of 1989 because of sewage fumes, backed-up toilets, and sewage in the bathrooms, kitchen, and basement. Kozol discussed the topic of inequalities with students and administrators. He discussed inequalities in classes, with teachers, and with facilities. These black students are required to attend East St. Louis schools without the hope of being transferred or bussed to a better school. As a teacher stated only about 55% of the kids will graduate from school and from this 55%, maybe one out of four will go to college. As Kozol travels through East St. Louis High School, he finds that teachers are not able to teach properly because of the lack of proper materials. The science labs are outdated by at least 30 years, they lack of proper text books/no textbooks, no lab tables, understaffed rooms, etc. In this school a lot of the teachers do not care about teaching anymore and a lot of them are full time substitutes without proper qualifications. Which of course, leads to students not paying attention or not getting any encouragement or the push they need to succeed, or even care about going to, school. Kozol observed in a lot of the classrooms students sitting around talking to other student. In most cases the teachers were not able to teach, or unwilling to even try anymore.     Jon Kozol was a substitute teacher who had worked in Boston for nearly 5 years now. Kozol’s text moved in chronological order throughout the story. He recently had landed a full time substitute job at Roxbury Elementary. He goes on about the trials and tribulations of working within a “segregated school.” It was segregated by economic status essentially. Children that lived in the ghetto made up the majority of Boston’s public schools, nearly 60 percent of which were black. Kozol also tells the sickening stories of racism that occurred in the school he worked in. Male teachers often beat their students when they disobeyed, and the vast majority of the times the child was black. When I black child spoke out of turn or was “disrupting the class” they were often sent to the cellar to receive whippings. These “disciplinary actions” would almost always leave the child in tears and covered in welts for the next several days. One story I found to be incredibly sickening was that of Edward. Edward was one of Mr. Kozol’s fourth grade students. Edward was also severely mentally challenged. Yet teachers still felt the need to beat him, often times leaving him bruised. Edward would cry all throughout school nearly every day: in English because he could not read, in writing because he could not write, and in math because he could not add or subtract.
