IMPROVISATION IS KEY
To do molecular biology on the cheap, biohackers have developed some creative workarounds: • for a $10 microscope, pop the lens o a webcam and stick it back on backwards. • for an $80 centrifuge, order the DremelFuge rotor and attach to a Dremel rotary tool. • for a free 37 ºC incubator, incubate tubes of E. coli in your armpit.

THE BIGGER TICKET
INCUBATOR
Some standard laboratory equipment such as fume hoods can get quite expensive, but one should not sacrifice safety for cost. For guidance on the necessary equipment, consult with local biohacker groups. Another option is to join the institutional biosafety committee at your local university or medical centre. These committees often have slots for nonscientists.

dubious about whether there is an extensive market for garage molecular biology. No one needs a PCR machine at home, and the accoutrements to biological research are expensive, even if their prices fall daily (see graphic). Then again, the same was said about personal computers, says George Church, a geneticist at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. As a schoolboy, he says, he saw his first computer and fell in love. “Everybody looked at me like, ‘Why on earth would you even want to have one of those?’” Carlson started his garage lab as something of a hobby, but he needed to do it without sapping resources from his lab at the University of Washington in Seattle. He bought equipment such as refurbished micropipettes — a staple in any molecular biology lab — and a used centrifuge on eBay. In 2007, fed up with grant applications and eager to spend more time working in his garage lab, he gave up his position at the university altogether. Carlson decided to follow up on work at the MSI. There, he had been part of a

Following accidents and allegations, it has been said that health and safety are not being taken serious in Britain’s Scientific Workplaces, there are many organisations that keep a check on laboratories to make sure that they are continuing to maintain the standards that are required for that particular scientific area and that all the staff members who work there are not being put at risk. The aims of these regulations are to ensure safe working practices and environmental protection. These regulations can be achieved by the correct use of the buildings, machinery and equipment as well as use of energy and water.…

Ectothermic animals are animals whose body temperature is affected by their surroundings. This means that if the environment is cold the animal will be cold. If the environment is warm the animal will be warm. This is because the animal doesn’t have the capability of regulating its body systems to keep a constant body temperature. When an ectothermic animal is cold, its heart rate will lower. When the animal is warmer, the heart rate will raise – as long as the temperature isn’t sufficiently high to harm the animal. When my grand-uncle died, hundreds of people came to his funeral. Many were former patients; they spoke of how gracious my grand-uncle was. He changed the lives of many people by caring for those who could not afford healthcare. Before I die, I want to better the lives of as many people possible by developing cheap and accessible treatments. HLI’s Student Week provides the chance to utilize theoretical knowledge from scientific articles, AP sciences, and independent studies in practical application. Since the field I am passionate about pursuing is pathology, HLI’s focus on life sciences at a molecular level would be the most beneficial program for me as I would be learning how medical professionals research in a laboratory. From the skills…
