Amalia Rodrigues
Amália Rodrigues
Fado is a fundamental part of the Portuguese culture, represents a population as a whole, and allows the listener to look in retrospect to the past and remember where they come from. Over the years there have been many “fadistas” for example, Dulce Pontes, and presently a great fadista, Mariza. However, there was one fadista that the people made connections too, and truly loved what she did, and was one of the first to put fado on the map and make it known worldwide. Her name was, Amália Rodrigues, and is considered the “Queen of Fado”. She didn’t write her own songs, in fact, people would write songs and have her sing them, and it was up to her to sing it or not. Amália was born one hundred years after the first fadista, Maria Severa was born. Over the years, Amália began to establish her seat in the world of fado, and instantly became known in worldwide and exposed fado to diverse cultures around the world. One of Amália Rodrigues most notorious sons was “Nem às Paredes Confesso”. In this song, the listener can interpret that she is hiding something, and through the meaning of the title, she won’t confess it to no one, not even the walls. One of her lyrics in the song is the following, “De quem eu gosto, Nem às paredes confesso, E até aposto, Que não gosto de ninguém…” During her life she married once, but shortly divorced right after, and this probably explains the fourth line. She says that she bets that she doesn’t like anyone, and you can infer that she probably learned from her past relationship and for her things didn’t work out as planned. So by saying the last two lines, its inferred she probably doesn’t want to begin another relationship with a new person. From the first two lines you can infer that she keeps many things to herself. By saying that not even to walls she will confess her love for someone it shows that she doesn’t talk about her feelings with anyone. “Quem sabe se te esqueci, Ou se te quero, Quem sabe até se é por ti,

However, the Spanish composer and famous pianist Alicia de Larrocha made certain that she, as well as her fellow Spanish composers, were not overlooked any longer. Beginning in the early 1920’s, she began her extremely successful life and accomplished every one of her dreams and aspirations before she passed away in 2009. Alicia’s success can be exemplified through her personal relationships with those around her, by her distinct playing style, and the astonishing way she overcame obstacles she was faced with throughout her life that lead to the abundance of rewards she received.…

Alma Leiva came to SIU to create the next project in her art series, “Celdas” (Prison Cells). Leiva was born and raised in Honduras, which is home to the city, San Pedro Sula, the murder capital of the world. While Leiva was studying in America, she learned her uncle was shot and killed in front of his family in that very city while on their way home from a soccer game. Her art is inspired by the crimes that take place in Honduras. She uses the Celdas as memorials for victims of violence. Each Celda represents a specific tragedy and tells the story of the victims’ murders. They also represent how immigrants who move from Honduras to America still feel the same fear and isolation they felt at home. Leiva juxtaposes indoor and outdoor environments in her pieces. For example, in Celda #8, which was created after the military coup in Honduras in 2010, Leiva uses soil to represent the element of mourning. To honor her uncle’s death, Leiva placed a soccer field in Celda #2. She also began to include specific Mayan gods pertaining to the story she was telling in her works. By Celda #11, Leiva had begun to explore the coping mechanisms people use when restricted by their circumstances, such as expression through art. It was an eye-opening experience to see Leiva’s works and how they represent only a small portion of the tragedies that take place everyday in Honduras.…

Collectively, epics of creation are well known for the world gradually going through the change from being completely chaotic to fairly and orderly. Looking specifically at Enuma Elish and the Ugaritic Baal Cycle, each depicts female and male gods in particular and unique ways. In successfully contrasting the males and females in these works, similarities are also therefore notably highlighted throughout the works. Both epics tell their story and characterize the gods and goddesses’ as ones who are extremely powerful and violent, principally the male gods, as well as the female and male “pairs” in the creations. Parallel to this, differences are highlighted in the acquiring of their titles as almighty ones, as well as their traits and roles.…

Hair care, skincare, toiletry, perfumery and decorative cosmetic products are all used in our daily routines to keep us clean, maintain healthy skin and teeth, to look good and smell nice. European laws that ensure the safety of these types of product call them ‘cosmetics’ and this is the term. Beginning with the Ancient Egyptians 10,000 years Before the Common Era up through today, the 20th century. Civilizations have used forms of cosmetics for centuries in religious rituals, to enhance beauty, and to promote good health. The entire population with large use of cosmetics honored gods, although some of the ingredients were poisonous, allure of cosmetics did not lessen. In Rome, there was a period of time when women were not considered beautiful if they did not wear makeup. England almost accepted a law in 18th century that enabled men to divorce their wives if they caught them wearing makeup. Century later, Queen Victoria publicly declared public use of cosmetic improper and vulgar.…

    In Nomine Matris

In Nomine Matris (In the Name of the Mother) is visually stunning, compelling work of art with powerhouse performances from its entire cast. It is a film that women can relate to, whether you’re a mother, daughter, performer etc. It is inspired by true events in the lives of real Flamenco performers. It is quite too long but the flow of the story is very interesting. In essence is a story about love and sacrifices, about motherhood, it's more than flamengo dance, music and song. It's about the burning passion & being loyal to it. The body movement, facial expression and the stomp of the feet are so professional. Liza Diño as Mara has really thrown everything into her role that this could be considered her finest performance to date. She discovers the passionate dance form of Flamenco-Filipiniana as an expression of her inner desires. Her desire to be the best principal dancer of a dance company, in pursuit of greater things versus the reality of her conditions as a daughter, friend, and lover are viewed externally by the drama that unfolds in the movie and internally by the dance movements expressed in all dance sequences but was soon immersed on a dilemma of the sacrifices she needs to make to achieve her dreams until the life of her baby got compromised. She will be accompanied by her mentor Mercedes (Clara Ramona) and mother Ava (Tami Monsod) as she embarked on a journey that will test her principles in life. Other cast of the film also did good as well. I was lucky to meet some cast of this film like Ms. Liza Diño, Tami Monsod and Clara Ramona after we watched the film. We also take a picture with them as a remembrance and also a proof that we watched the…
