A distillation experiment was performed in attempt to separate two miscible fluids. This experiment used fractional distillation to separate ethanol from the azeotropic mixture of ethanol and water. The initial composition of the solution did not matter because the goal of the experiment was to distill the ethanol-water solution and obtain 95% ethanol in the distilled fraction. The percentage composition is obtained by the calculated density of distilled product. The azeotropicmixture was separated using a fractional distillation apparatus. The apparatus contained a fractional distillation column with acopper sponge; this was used to capture the water vapor to repeat the simple distillation process, this method yield 88% of ethanol. This form of distillation was shown to be effective in distilling a mixture with similar boiling points.…

The purpose of this lab was to determine the atomic weight of magnesium by measuring the amount of hydrogen gas evolved when hydrochloric acid reacted with magnesium. In order to measure the atomic weight I needed to measure the amount of the hydrogen gas that was evolved in reaction to the acid of the magnesium. The reaction used was: Mg + 2HCl --> H2 + Mg2+ (aq) + 2Cl- (aq). The major findings of this experiment were that there was a chemical reaction between hydrochloric acid and magnesium, and the reaction produced the hydrogen gas. The results also indicated how many moles of hydrogen gas were equal to the amount of moles of magnesium consumed.…

7.46 X 10-2 moles of HCl X 2 = .1492 moles of HCl used and the molarity would be .1492 moles HCl/ .05 liters HCl = 2.984 molarity. The amount of unreacted HCl in the solution is shown here: 0.1492 moles used - .0746 moles needed = 0.0746 moles unreacted. The amount of NaOH moles needed to completely react with this excess HCl is .0746 moles of HCl and .0746 moles of NaOH. To titrate the excess HCl you would need a molarity of 2.984 NaOH. In the equation Zn(s) + 2HCl (aq) = H2 (g) + ZnCl2 (aq) ZnCl2 is soluble. When using NaOH the equation would be ZnCl2 + 2NaOH = Zn (OH)2 + ZnCl and Zn(OH)2 has a low solubility.…

Alkyl halides are compounds in which a halogen atom replaces a hydrogen atom of an alkane. Alkyl halides are classified as primary, secondary or tertiary depending on the number of alkyl substituents directly attached to the carbon attached to the halogen atom. The purpose of this lab was to properly prepare t-butyl chloride from t-butyl-alcohol in a concentrated hydrochloric acid. The reaction occurs through a nucleophilic substitution, which is when a nucleophile replaces the leaving group in the substrate. In this lab, the hydroxyl group of t-butyl alcohol is replaced by a chlorine atom. The reaction proceeds through an SN1 mechanism (Weldegirma 38-41).…

At the beginning of the lab, a micro test tube with and without glass wool was weighed on an analytical balance. A watch glass, crucible, and lid were also weighed. The masses of all the materials needed for the lab were recorded in the data tables of the laboratory notebook. An unknown vial was obtained from the teacher and set to zero on the balance. About 0.6 grams of the unknown was measured into the micro test tube. The analytical balance was set to zero again and then the test tube with the unknown was measured and recorded.…

Which type of compound usually has higher melting points: ionic compounds or covalent compounds? What is the reason for this difference in melting points? (3 points) Ionic compounds have higher melting and boiling points than covalent compounds. The electrostatic attraction in an ionic bond is very strong hence a lot of heat energy is required to break it down, ionic bonds have high melting and boiling points. In covalent bonds, the intermolecular forces are very weak and are easily broken, hence lesser heat is required and thus covalent bonds have lower melting and boiling points.…
