Bullying and Depression
“Depression is not a joke! It’s a real illness that doesn’t discriminate. No amount of money or fame can fix it. The funniest man on earth couldn’t just think positive and be healed. Support those who battling depression and other mental health issues. It takes lives!” (Robin Williams) In the novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Arnold Spirit suffers from Bullying and Depression. Arnold faces a lot of challenges during his childhood like being poor and lonely, The students at his school make fun of him because he is Indian, and his best friend is mean and pushes him around. One of the challenges Arnold had during his childhood was being poor and lonely. His family is too poor to afford vet care, so Arnolds dad had to shoot the dog. Junior was born with brain damage and as a result of that he gets picked on by the other reservation kids: “My head was so big that little Indian skulls orbited around it. Some of the kids called me Orbit. And other kids just called me Globe. The bullies would pick me up, spin me in circles, put their finger down on my skull, and say, ‘I want to go there’ ‘ Some kids were calling him hydro names like Hydromatic, Hydrocarbon, Hydrocrack and many more. Rowdy and Rowdys dad like to bully Arnold Spirit, Rowdy likes to push Arnold around and call him names.
