Overview:
For this portfolio assignment, you will create an alternative ending for one of the stories you have read in Unit 4.
Step 1: Choose ONE of the following stories:
“A White Heron” by Sarah Orne Jewett “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” by Mark Twain “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” by Ambrose Bierce “A Pair of Silk Stockings” by Kate Chopin “The Wife of His Youth” by Charles Waddell Chestnut “The Lemon Tree Billiards House” by Cedric Yamanaka
Step 2: Re-read your selected story. Step 3: Print out the Author’s Style Graphic Organizer. (Sent to you in a webmail and posted on the Section Message Board.) As you read, consider and identify any of the following structures used by your author:
Literary Devices - Analogy Hyperbole Irony Metaphor Simile
Figurative Language - Parallelism Repetition
Antithesis
Step 4: Think about the current ending of your selected story. How would you change it? At what point will you insert your CHANGE to the original action of the story? Brainstorm the major plot events you want to make part of your new ending.
Step 5: Begin drafting!! While you’re recreating the ending of the original story, remember to incorporate as much of the original tone, setting, characters, and style that the original author used. Step 6: You will then revise with my comments and suggestions, and submit the FINAL DRAFT in Unit 4 Lesson 12!
