1. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was created to address the low retention rate at Cornell University during the times of Jim Crow Laws. 2. In 2010, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. decided to boycott Arizona and move their 2010 National Convention to Las Vegas, in protest of the recent Arizona law that allows for profiling of potential illegal immigrants. 3. Vertner Woodson Tandy became the first registered black architect in the state of New York. 4. Vertner Woodson Tandy became the first African American to pass the military commissioning examination and was commissioned First Lieutenant in the 15th Infantry of the New York State National Guard. 5. Part of Henry Arthur Callis's life was spent as a medical consultant to theVeterans Hospital in Tuskegee, Alabama. 6. With the death of Henry Arthur Callis on November 12, 1974, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. no longer had any living Jewels. 7. One of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. prominent members W.E.B. Dubois, came up with the idea of the Niagara movement, with later led to the NAACP. 8. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Member and former Washington, D.C mayor Marion Barry was the first chairman of the SNCC. 9. Seven Alpha men represented the United States at the politically-charged 1936 Summer Olympics: Jesse Owens, Ralph Metcalfe, Frederick Pollard, Jr., Cornelius Johnson, Archibald Williams, Dave Albritton, and John Woodruff. 10. After the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 and the nation's entry into World War II, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity inc. fought to secure rights for its membership within the ranks of Officers in the Armed Forces. 11. In 1956, the fraternity made a "pilgrimage" to Cornell in celebration of its Golden Jubilee which drew about 1,000 members who traveled by chartered train from Buffalo, New York to Ithaca. 12.
