Muhammad was historically significant in many ways. “...Muhammad, was born in the bustling city of Makkah around A.D. 570.” (pg 271). Muhammad was a man born in Makkah, a city in Arabia, around the year 570 A.D. He was raised by his uncle, since he was orphaned at a young age. “By age 13 he was working as a camel caravan worker.” (notes). At the young age of 13, Muhammad already had a job as a camel caravan worker. “When Muhammad was about 25 years old, Kadijah proposed marriage to him.” (pg 271). When Muhammad was 25, his boss, a 40 year old woman named Kadijah, asked him to marry her, which brought him from the poor class to the elite class. “...in A.D. 610, Muhammad experienced a revelation, or vision.” (pg 272). A. “In 632 CE the prophet Muhammad visited his native city of Mecca from his home in exile at Medina, and in doing so he set an example that devout Muslims have sought to emulate ever since” (B&Z 355). Each year hundreds of thousands of Muslims travel to Mecca by land, sea, and air to make the hajj (“the holy pilgrimage to Mecca”) and visit the holy sites of Islam. As years went by the pilgrims decrease, but in the 9th c. it had become so popular that Muslim rulers went to the extent to meet the needs of travelers passing through their lands. When the pilgrimage season was nearing, crowds would gather at major trading centers such as Baghdad, Damascus, and Cairo. There the…

Sunni, Shiite, and Sufi are three branches of Islam. The Shiite and Sunni’s were the first really major division of the Islamic religion. This division was the result of a political argument over who should precede Muhammed. Sunni’s name means tradition and they believed the legitimacy of the Orthodox caliphates, and based everything off those beliefs. Sunni’s believe that Muhammad did not designate a successor. Now Shiite’s get their name from the word Shia, which means faction. They believe that Muhammad did leave a successor and it was the son-in-law and cousin of Muhammad named, Ali. They do not believe the same thing as Sunnis and disagree and do not get along with them. Now Sufi’s are” a contemplative school of Islam that aims to develop an individual 's consciousness of God though chanting, recitation of litanies, music and physical movement (SCRUGGS, 2010, para. )” Sufis find the importance by approaching the inner meaning of god through mysticism. They want to find the hidden meanings of the world they do not read or follow the Qur’an as strictly and as a result have closer relationships to other religions (SCRUGGS,…

One reason why the Islamic Empire came to be so well known is its economy. Muslims did have too many resources, due to the fact that they were located in Saudi Arabia, a vast, dry, desert-like land. But their location actually helped them, as Saudi Arabia is surrounded by three different continents: Africa, Europe, and Asia. Also, Saudi Arabia was located very close to major trading routes. That's how Muslims' economy worked: they used trade. Because of all of these, Saudi Arabia became a major trading hub for all three continents. They became so popular that the city of Mecca became a trading city, and Arabic became the language of trade. They traded things like spices, cotton, rubies, and other…

Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali is considered an autobiography, this book describes the hardships of her life. The first memory she talks about is of her grandmother forcing her to memorize her ancestry, which she failed to do and this resulted in her being beaten by her grandmother. The setting of the books is always changing, as her mother was doing the best she could to raise her children the proper Islamic way. Examples of some settings are Saudi Arabia, Nairobi, and Ethiopia. During her childhood, she describes the different treatments she and her sister, Haweya, would receive because of their gender. The Islamic Golden Age or the Islamic Renaissance, is traditionally dated from the 8th to 13th centuries A.D., but has been extended by one scholar to at least the 15th century by recent scholarship. During this period, artists, engineers, scholars, poets, philosophers, geographers and traders in the Islamic world contributed to agriculture, the arts, economics, industry, law, literature, navigation, philosophy, sciences, sociology, and technology, both by preserving earlier traditions and by adding inventions and innovations of their own. Howard R. Turner writes: "Muslim artists and scientists, princes and laborers together made a unique culture that has directly and indirectly influenced societies on every continent."…

Leila Ahmed’s book is an example of what scholarly research should resemble. At no time did I feel that she was being bias or subjective towards any side on this highly discussed and sensitive topic. Nowhere does Ahmed specifically go about attempting to correct misconceptions or often misquoted passages; but rather, she goes about a proper chronological historical understanding of the treatment of women before, during, and after the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). This, I feel, is the main theme of the 3 chapters we read: Comparing and contrasting the treatment of women in the social, domestic, and political realms before, during, and after Prophet Muhammad’s (pbuh) life.…
