All About Reality Television – “Reel or Real”
All about Reality Television – “Reel or Real”
The Inception of Television:
Television has always been a medium for educating, spreading awareness and mainly entertaining for over four decades now and will go on for decades to come. But the question faced today by the audience is whether television has lost its authenticity and innocence that it once had when it came to India. When television came into India in the early 1900s, the only broadcasted channel was doordarshan that showcased shows in coherence with the Government and still follows the same suite even today, but with the emergence of various other channels such as Zee network, Star network, colors and other many more channels like MTV, channel V, UTV Bindass have given the audience a variety of choices to choose from. Now the question arises that with the choice given to the public do the channels have a certain responsibility towards the content they showcase.
The Advent of Reality Shows:
Soap operas have always been the highest grossing point whereas television in India is concerned, until recently when it was sweeped over by reality television shows that got the audience hooked on to the shows like a bee to a jar of honey. Reality shows in India started in the late 1900s and since then have been very popular among the audience. The search for a musical band was the 1st reality show broadcasted on channel V called Viva. It was then followed by Kaun Banega Crorepati, Nach Baliye, Is Jungle se Mujhe Bachao, Sach ka Samna, Rakhi Ka swayamvar and the latest being Satyamev Jayate etc. Reality shows broadcasted on various channels today cannot be generlised saying that they disturb and disregard the values of the citizens of India or the audience in any way or form, because there are certain reality shows that do stand up to the standards of their show and provide pure entertainment and at the same time impart knowledge in the process simultaneously, the reality show is called Kaun Banega Crorepati hosted by Amitabh Bachan and which ran for 3 to 4 seasons continuously due to the popularity of the show and Satyamev Jayate that make the audience aware of certain social issues that have been hidden or swept under the rug. This show brings those issues into limelight and finds a solution to avoid it , but on the other hand there are shows that are highly overrated and exaggerated to an extent of luring the audience to voyeuristic shows such as Roadies broadcasted by MTV. This particular show is known for their foul mouthed auditions to test the participants for their threshold of being under pressure.
The Truth Behind the popularity of Reality shows:
Reality shows work mainly on the basis of TRPs as in Television Rating Points. The higher the TRPs the more the seasons and the more the money they gain. Thus in orders to attain these TRPs, the producers of the shows go to the extent of manipulating real emotions to attract more audience. The few insights brought in to attract the audience are the way the media publicizes their show by broadcasting the most entertaining snippets of the show repeatedly. The whole point behind the truth of the reality show is a myth because even though the show is real and the contestants participating in it are real, including the emotions. It all depends on the edited version and the situation they are faced with and how the end result is being broadcasted to the audience that lures them to watch shows such as these. Thus it is the audience that decides to encourage the rise of reality shows, once the audience takes up a stand to regulate what they watch, the reality shows would then come to a standstill. But in this context it also refers to the channels responsibility to tone down the content of their show on humanitarian grounds and for the welfare of the audience.

The Faux Authenticity of Reality TV Saturday night, you have nothing to do so you turn on the TV, and the first show it displays is Man V.S. Wild. You wonder whether or not this show is true in its content, because the host could be getting some support behind the scenes. Reality TV is not truly authentic because the word “reality” has been trivialized, the content in the shows are often times distorted, and the advertisement for the shows portray only insignificant scenes. “Reality” in reality TV has morphed into the idea of entertainment rather than its definition being truth. The intention of these programs was, at first, to portray genuine occurrences in the lives of everyday people. Over time, TV stations and producers have twisted it, turning these situations into exaggerated truths. For example, in the show Operation Repo, two hosts are out to tow a construction vehicle because of the owners lack of payment. Almost immediately a verbal fight breaks out, then a physical fight, leading to the owner operating his vehicle, intentionally damaging the hosts’ truck, causing another physical fight. In reality, people argue for their car, but would not use physical violence or damaging property as a solution. Operation Repo is meant to show real life repossessions, but these situations the hosts are experiencing, are more of a sensationalized version of reality. Producers add more drama and fighting to make the show interesting to the viewers. Reality TV suggests you are seeing everything going on behind the camera, but you may not be seeing all of it. On Dirty Jobs, host Mike Rowe experiences different and usually filthy jobs, explaining how they are accomplished. One episode shows him inspecting a sewer, but throughout the program, the professionals are doing the job while he sits back and makes comments on it. Scenes of him making…

Since the 1990’s, when reality television first started becoming widely popular, we have been able to see into the lives of different kinds of people, often turning everyday people into celebrities. With some of the most popular reality television shows, like Big Brother, True Life, American Idol, and most recently Jersey Shore, we are led on to believe that it is all real ("The Hunger Games Theme of Versions of Reality”). The reality of this television though is that most of it is either altered or manipulated just for our own entertainment. The directors of some of these shows often script, manipulate and plan situations to make the shows more appealing to their audiences ("How Much of the Reality”). Even in popular books like The Hunger Games where reality television is a theme, it is shown that it is changed just for the entertainment of the viewers ("The Hunger Games Theme of Versions of Reality”). While it is perceived to be real, the title of “reality television” is a misnomer because most showed turn out to be fake and scripted.…

When Philo T. Farnsworth invented the electric television, he probably did not think that it would be used to show people eating bugs, finding husbands based on votes of viewers, or living on deserted islands. But that is exactly what you can see any given night on television now. This newest form of television programming fad is the reality television genre. Reality television is now on every station, every night, everywhere. The web page Fact Monster credits the beginning of reality TV as beginning around 2000 when a little reality game show called Who wants to be a Millionaire hit television screens. Millionaire saw the rebirth of game shows but also started the most popular television genre in years. Some say that MTV's The Real World was the first popular reality based show, but until Millionaire there were no popular reality shows on networks or primetime.…

The television was originally invented for communication purposes as well as education, so it is doubtful that Philo Farnsworth imagined his invention showing people eating bugs, finding husbands based on votes from viewers, or living on deserted islands. The newest fad in television programming is reality television and is evidently dominating the airwaves, appearing on many channels, every night of the week. The ratings constantly increase as the popularity of reality television continues to grow and consequently, producers become extremely wealthy by fueling the addiction. Reality television is built upon the foundation of exposing human emotions, despite the social, psychological, and ethical issues involved which negatively impact the lives of its viewers. All television shows engage in ideological teaching and reality television is no different. The first social consequence of reality television is the misguided message placed upon the importance of competition. Shows such as Survivor or The Bachelor reinforce the idea that life is nothing but a constant competition where only one person is awarded materially, interpersonally, etc. The increased value placed on competition eventually leads to invasions of foreign countries that otherwise pose no threat or cutthroat businesses that cause mergers and acquisitions which lead to a shrinking workforce. A more dangerous message of reality television is that education is unnecessary in order to be successful. Consequently, teenagers may begin to view education as less desirable and much too effortful that will not benefit them nearly as much as participating in a reality show and becoming instantly famous and possibly rich. These messages only demonstrate the lack of authenticity of reality television where viewers develop twisted views of what is fact. There is an extreme misrepresentation of various racial backgrounds for contestants on television which…

Reality television is a huge part of television-viewing culture today. Having roots in American television, the genre of reality TV only soared in the early 2000s following the large success of shows such as Big Brother and Survivor. In 2007-2008, reality TV programming in America captured 77 percent of the total audience watching the top 10 programmes alone (nielsonwire, 2011). As the name implies, it is a genre of television program that focuses on portraying reality. This ‘reality’ is purported by television producers to involve unscripted actions by ‘real’ ordinary people in ‘real’ situations. (Beck, Hellmueller & Aeschbacher, 2012) However, there exists discourse by media critics claiming that the concept of reality TV, as promoted by TV producers, is far from the truth. In short, the claims are that there is no reality in reality TV; or as Potts puts it, it is “nothing short of a conceptual and practical lie”. In fact, situations shown on reality TV programmes are thought to be non-common and rigged(Potts, 2007), while some claimed that there is an interaction of fiction and reality in the shows.(Beck, Hellmueller & Aeschbacher, 2012) These pose a threat to the credibility of reality TV as their claims of being real, honest and unscripted are being challenged. However given that reality TV is slowly dominating primetime broadcast, it seems that the issue poses no threat to its mass-appeal and popularity.…

Reality shows are a huge hit with urban Indian viewers. Apart for American reality shows like Survivor and Amazing Race that are very popular, the Indian adaptations of American reality shows have rewritten the history of Indian television programming. India's variation of Who Wants' to be a Millionaire, Kaun Banega Crorepati, is one of Indian televisions biggest success stories. It has been the number one show in India with consistently high TV ratings. Indian Idol, a spin-off of American Idol, is yet another success story. “Reality television is popular because the audiences identify with the contestants and their ups and downs.
