Alexander The Great: Hellenistic Artwork Analysis
The death of Alexander the Great inspired the beginning of the Hellenistic era of the fourth century. The characteristics of this period marked a separation and divide from earlier Greek’s works. Hellenistic artist’s begun expressing their sculptures with such high degree of naturalism contrasting with the earlier religious sculptures that used the idea of realism. Another essential idea that Hellenistic artists used to convey their message on sculptures was the use of emotion, drama, lighting and dynamics poses. The foundation of the Hellenistic era supported many of the works created during the Italian Renaissance. The artist created the figure around the early fourteenth century, which was also the time period of the Italian Renaissance. The sculpture presents the Virgin seated gracefully on the ground with one knee raised and the other beneath her. The baby Jesus is viewed tugging on his mother’s dress while simultaneously glancing at the viewer. The subject manner in this piece attempts to illustrate the submission to the divine. The Italian sculptor did not paint in the color of the pupils for both figures; instead he focused on honoring the holy and thus creating an atmosphere of tranquility. The artistic techniques used to create the Madonna of Humility involve Polychromy and some traces of gilding, which is apparent in the hair of Jesus and his …show more content…
First, many of the sculptures created during the Hellenistic era were sculpted in the nude and contained an emphasis on expressing an individual rather than just the divine figures. Indifferently, Italian artists initially created their works with clothes on, with more attention towards a realism point of view while simultaneously preserving the representation of the figures that reside in Heaven. The facial expression on the Dancing Faun is shown with such empathic emotion with the eyes focused on the sky and arms outstretched as if to block light from the face. However, the Madonna Of Humility pictures the Virgin with a static but preserved facial expression along with the blank expression on the Child’s face. Note that not all sculptures remained with static expressions, famous artists such as Giovanni da Bologna sculpted pieces that showed dynamics emotion and twisting bodies. Another key difference between the Madonna of Humility and Dancing Faun is their Medium. Bronze figures, during the Hellenistic Art period, could be made to propose the daintiness of real bodies and development in a way quiet, strong marble proved unable thus contrasting with the Madonna of Humility.     The male youth, known as the Kouros, was depicted in the nude during the Archaic Period of Greek art. The Kouros was made between 590 and 580 BCE, out of marble. They used this beige marble as a durable material for their sculptures. The Kouros is depicted as young man in a stiff, upright position with his arms hanging at either side.     This classical Greek sculpture is titled the Riace Bronzes. The Riace statues are two life-size bronze statues each weighing nearly a ton. Statue A which is depicted above is of a young warrior, while statue B which is not depicted is of an older warrior wearing a helmet. In this analysis I will be concentrating on Statue A. The sculptor of this statue remains unknown; however most experts attribute this statue to Polyclitus, an expert Greek sculptor and mathematician, or one of his many disciples. The Riace is from the early Classical Period, made around 445 BCE. It was unexpectedly discovered in the Ionian Sea along with an ancient shipwreck off the coast of southern Italy in 1972. It was restored to its present condition. It once held a lance or spear like weapon in its right hand and a shield strapped to its left forearm. Possessions of weapons such as a shield and spear have earned the statue the title of warrior-hero. However, according to Dr. Jennifer Henrichs of Louisiana State University the statue “exhibits a visible headband thought to be the crowning base for a victory wreath typically reserved for champions” (Henrichs 15), implying that the statue might be of that of an Olympic athlete instead of a warrior. The statue is poised for action but still relaxed, trying to represent physical perfection. This potential energy presented is typical of Greek Classical Period art.     Through the shape, texture, and value, Mary and Jesus were created very humanistic. The sculpture altogether is in the shape of a triangle. The triangle shape was used to represent the Holy Trinity, symbolizing God being the three aspects of religion. The value of the shading on the Pieta affirmed the humanistic features of Mary and Jesus. Mary’s drapery falls down very smoothly but still shows that gravity is pulling it down with the shading and layers. Also, Jesus’ ribs are deeply indented to give a hue of how the light would have hit his ribs at the time. And lastly, the smooth texture of the entire sculpture gives it a presence of calm and harmony.     He was the first artist to be recognized as moving towards naturalism and began painting his subject matter with more lifelike proportions and shapes. Giotto di Bondone (1266-1337), one of Cimabue’s students, was known as one of the greatest artists in Florence. He brought to life paintings with dimension before science was really discovered a century later. His paintings draw more accurately from life and he depicted a more natural and realistic reflection of his subjects. His painting of Ognissanti Madonna 1306-10 shows Madonna as the central figure. Her figure is evident through her clothing, giving it a more lifelike look. Christ again as a baby is shown looking like a small baby and not a miniature adult.     During the medieval era, art was usually flat and and two dimensional, subjects were mostly religious, figures looked flat with little movement, faces showed little emotions, and paintings were vibrant and of bright colors.
