Alex And Charlie's War: A Short Story
Alex and Charlie advanced over a large bridge. After crossing Charlie noticed Alex hunched over on the bank. Charlie went to see what was wrong with Alex and realized he had been hit. Alex had already begun feeling shaky. His friend helped him get to a small barn in which wounded soldiers from both sides housed. The next morning Charlie wrote a letter to Becca informing her of Alex’s injury. When Becca received the letter she began feeling concerned about the possible marriage to a cripple. Becca had heard of Alex staying at the New York hospital. She sent a letter to her sister to give to Alex. Before the letter could arrive Alex arrived in Jonesville. When Becca visited Alex he was asleep when she entered the room. …show more content…
He expected Alex to be perfectly fine. Charlie yearned to come home to see his friends. Charlie arrived in Washington in late summer. Becca was thankful for she didn’t want the responsibility of Alex’s leg. Some days Alex was better and some days he was worse. He temperature rose and fell frequently. Becca felt that Alex wanted his leg because of her. She couldn’t admit that she could never marry a cripple. Even when Charlie’s regiment would be injured, Charlie would emerge without a scratch. One day he wouldn’t be so lucky. Until that day he would fight to free the slaves. He would be a free man from war in six weeks. At Stanford Heights Federal cannon opened fire. The first to move forward was the Seventh Michigan. Confederates fired and some began lying down. Union Troops tried pushing the Rebel’s back. The Jonesville newspaper reported the battle. Charlie wanted home more than ever. He was tired of the fighting. He had seen the elephant and now only wanted to be home for Christmas. Alex had begun to spend more and more time out of bed each day. He and Becca took long walks that began to tire Becca out. Alex protested that he shall be ready for war anytime
