Effects of Alcoholism One of the many problems in the United States is Alcoholism. Alcoholism is considered a disease and has several sever effects that can be dangerous, and in some cases fatal. Alcoholism can have negative effects on a person physically, psychologically, and emotionally. The most obvious of the three effects is physical. These are the effects that can become fatal if alcoholism is present for a long period of time. Alcoholism can cause cancer in the liver, stomach and kidneys. It is also related to heart disease, liver disease, high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes. All these effects of drinking can and have been proven to eventually lead to death. Drinking while pregnant has also shown death of the fetus in some cases. The body can become physically addicted to alcohol as well. If a body goes without drinking it can show signs of withdraw, such as stomach ache, anxiety, shaking, and severe sweating. All the effects of excessively drinking for long periods of time are proof to drink in moderation, for the safety of ones self. The second negative effects caused by alcoholism are psychological. Some psychological effects can include depression, anxiety, and aggression. Alcohol is a depressant. When it begins to get into the nervous system it will decrease the activity of serotonin (the “feel good” hormone). As a person drinks more alcohol they may begin to feel down or sad. It can lead to thoughts of suicide. A person can also become clinically depressed as a result of drinking alcohol. Many people think that they can get rid of pain that is already accruing by drinking, not knowing that alcohol can make only make it worse. A buzz can be enjoyable for a while but after the initial “feel good” wears off stress or anxiety will kick in. Anxiety can include fear, nightmares, discontent or restlessness.
