SERVICE MATRIX
On the Customer wants and needs in the service package Starbucks uses Standard with options; using moderately repeatable sequence. Customer has some decision making power. This is evident as though customers have the ability to customize their coffee specifically for them, the choices they have are standardized; somewhat mass customization. On the operations service process design Starbucks uses a limited number of process pathways. Line flows, low work complexity. As explained in the process selection section, Starbucks uses a line flow process. All coffee is made in a sequential order; following the same format repeatedly. Hence, Starbucks falls into the Co-routed services section of the matrix as it offers a moderate number of choices to customers using moderately standardized processes.

    What factors accounted for Starbucks extraordinary success in the early 1990’s? What was so compelling about Starbucks value proposition? What brand image did Starbucks develop during this period? Starbucks captured a tremendous amount of success in the early 90’s by opening European-style coffee houses targeted toward affluent, well-educated clientele. Howard Schultz, the CEO that bought the company from the original owners, envisioned creating a ‘third place’ for people to meet. Rather than just treating the home and office as the primary places people spend their time, the company introduced Starbucks as a ‘third place’; customers were encouraged to linger and socialize at their locations. The company did not rely on a formal marketing strategy, but rather used the atmosphere of their stores to create a ‘coffee experience’ for customers. The company’s value proposition was used as the focal point of their brand strategy. Their goal was to make coffee consumption a part of everyday life. The proposition had three components: Coffee quality: the company had direct involvement in every aspect of coffee production, from working directly with the farmers growing the beans to the roasting process. This approach emphasized a strong commitment to product quality. Customer intimacy: the company aimed for employees, or “partners”, to provide a high level of personal service. Partners were trained that customer requests are to be encouraged and are to be met with a smile. Partners were encouraged to get to know repeat clients and reach out to new customers to make outstanding service a part of the purchase. Atmosphere: unlike most retail stores selling food and beverages, Starbucks created an atmosphere where customers could linger. Moreover, Starbucks uses the bean stock to improve their operations through many decades. In the year 1991, Starbucks was the first U.S. privately owned coffee company in the history to offer stock options called “bean stock”. The current CEO of Starbucks is Howard Schultz, he replaced Jim Donald to turn Starbucks around from struggling in the coffee world and he is now currently focusing on the Internet projects for the company, also managing Starbucks with the stock-option called bean stock. This idea is mainly given to managers, baristas and employees inside the manufactures. Bradley Honeycutt, a woman in Starbuck’s human resources department, came up with the name “Bean Stock” and stated that “it’s not only a playful reference to the coffee beans we sell but also evokes Jack’s beanstalk, which grew to the sky.” This is why bean stock has its own uniqueness and no other company has a stock-option plan that is as widely used as bean stock. Bean stock is the main difference between the operations in Starbucks and other manufactures in the same industry, because Starbuck’s operation focuses on turning every employee into a partner, in other words, bean stock forms a big family within Starbucks Company. This bean stock option is the core process of Starbucks which can be defined as a chain of activities that delivers value to external customers.
