Air Pollution

The average person breathes about three thousand gallons of air per day. Imagine if that air was dirty? Most of us take for granted the air we breathe, and don’t even realize that we are breathing in toxins. Most of us aren’t even aware of how polluted the air is and how unhealthy it can be for the average person to breathe it in. It can make breathing difficult for some people and it affects all living things. Air pollution is a major problem in the world today. There have been many laws passed regulating air pollution to protect our environment and all living things. According to Webster, pollution is defined as “a state of being polluted: impure (Taylor 1). Air is a mixture of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.3% carbon dioxide, and around 0.7% rare gases making it colorless and odorless. One can consider any object containing smell, for example the smell of a rose, the smell of a pine forest, a woman’s perfume, or a rain cloud, to be air pollution (Taylor 1). However, the impurity of air is not considered to be pollution unless it has an odor that irritates the senses, affects visibility, corrupts property, or is toxic to humans, animals, or plants (Taylor 1). Some toxicants in polluted areas, which bring about huge concerns include: sulfur dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, hydrogen fluoride, chloride, ethylene, and ozone and peroxyacetyl nitrate (Taylor 2). The never ending increase in world population and other groups of people in small regions continue to multiply the amount of pollutants released in the air (Taylor 2). Paul Ehrlich once wrote “Too many cars, too many factories, too much detergent, too much pesticides, multiplying contrails, inadequate sewage treatment plants, too little water, too much carbon dioxide-all can be traced easily to too many people” (Hodges 12).Some pollution problems increase as population grows because of the amounts of human waste (Hodges 17). The air pollution that

Air quality is a measure of the amount of pollutants emitted into the atmosphere and the dispersion potential of an area to dilute those pollutants. It is a massive problem of urban living and remains one of the largest environmental concerns. Spatial dimension relates to how air quality differs between places at different times and under different weather patterns. Increasing population and demand for more goods puts greater pressure on air quality. The human population’s interaction with the environment relates to the ecological dimension. In terms of air quality this relates to the impacts of increased gases and particles associated with transportation, industrial activities, smoking, dust storms from over grazing on marginal land, bush fires and the burning fossil fuels . Many of these activities cause increases in carbon monoxide, ozone, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, lead and particles in the atmosphere. People get health problems due to these increases. For example, excessive carbon monoxide levels in the blood stream reduce its ability to transport oxygen. This in turn causes headaches and tiredness.…

When people think about air pollution, the things that come to their mind are smog, acid rain, and other forms of outdoor air pollution. Air Pollution is not a new topic. It is a problem that we have noticed since the industrial revolution, when trees, houses and cars were covered in soot from the factories. Every year, chemical substances present in the air within buildings affect the healths of thousands of people. The definition of air pollution is "The presence in the atmosphere of one or more contaminants as is injurious, or tends to be injurious, to human health or welfare, animal or plantlife."Ozone, a gas, is a major part of air pollution in cities. When ozone forms air pollution, it's also called smog. Air pollution are the leading cause of death in China. Acid rain falls on 30% of the country. The World Health Organization has found that about 750,000 people die prematurely each year from respiratory problems in China.…

Our Environment: Why Clean Air is Important Air pollution has many different causes and affects us in many different ways. Pause a moment to make a list of all the different types of air pollution you come across in a single day and you might be surprised. From car exhausts to cigarette smoke, garden bonfires to forest fires, rotting food on landfills to fumes from factories...each is an example of air pollution. Air pollution can come in varying degrees on varying scales. A person burning a small bonfire certainly doesn’t have the same effect as a large forest fire taking out swaths of California forest, just as a car’s exhaust has a minimal impact when compared to a jet engine’s exhaust. The fact is, most of us probably take clean air for granted, for better or worse. Breathing in oxygen is so natural to us that we rarely even stop to realize that we’re doing it, and thus, we rarely, if ever take into account the damage that is being done to the quality of our air. Of all the essential nutrients needed by the human, oxygen is the one we must have on a moment-to-moment basis. We can’t live without it even for a few minutes. Since our bodies need oxygen to live, it is natural that the quality and quantity of oxygen should largely affect our health. Because oxygen is so vital to our health and well-being, it is essential that we try to make sure that we are doing everything we can to make the air we breathe as clean as possible. Air that is polluted not only is hazardous to us, but it is hazardous to all animals. Having clean air requires that we all work together to make a difference.…

One of the major threats that our environment is facing today is environmental pollution, increasing with every passing year and causing grave and irreparable damage to the atmosphere. The mechanization of society, the urbanization, introduction of motorized vehicles, and the explosion of the human population have caused an exponential growth in the increase of waste by-products. The indiscriminate discharge of untreated industrial and domestic wastes into waterways, the "throwaway" attitude towards thousands of tons of solid wastes and other particulates into the atmosphere have resulted in major environmental disasters.…

To understand pollution of air, some knowledge of the atmosphere is required. Atmosphere is a layer consisting of a few gases surrounding the planet earth and is vital for the survival of life on earth. The atmosphere protects earth from abrupt temperature fluctuations from the powerful ultra violet radiation coming from the sun. The atmosphere is made up of nitrogen 78%,oxygen 21%,argon 0.9%,carbon dioxideo0.03% and small amount of trace gases ,helium ,neon, krypton, xenon, hydrogen and ozone. In addition, there is some amount of water vapour. The atmosphere exists in layer called troposphere, stratosphere, ionoshhere and exosphere in that order from the surface of earth. The atmosphere is not static and is moving constantly with respect to earth surface, both horizontally and vertically.…

Air Pollution is anything that goes into the air that is harmful. Most air pollution is manmade. The largest contributor to air pollution is the burning of fossil fuels such as gas and coal. Air pollution can also be said is the accumulation in the atmosphere of substances that, in sufficient concentrations, endanger human health or produce other measured effects on living matter and other materials. Among the major sources of air pollution are power and heat generation, the burning of solid wastes, industrial processes, and, especially, transportation. The six major types of air pollutants are carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, particulates, sulfur dioxide, and photochemical oxidants.…

Everyday actions cause pollutants; one major contributor to air pollution that humans produce is carbon monoxide. We do this simply by driving our automobiles. This toxic pollutant is considered a primary air pollutant because it enters our air directly from the source; our motor vehicles. Human made pollution is something that we can change by using less fuel, coal and oil in our cars, home and factories. Standards have been set by government agencies to help regulate the levels of pollutants in the air. In many cases it is too late. The air pollution control act of 1955, which established federal grants for research and the Clean Air Act (CAA) that further extended the federal government powers for direct intervention to reduce pollution, were established because of increasing detriments to human’s health and the environment. (Christoforou, 2004) The health hazards that are a result of air pollution have become more common to our elderly and young children. Lung disease, asthma, chest pain or even death, are the results of our careless activities. In the 1930s in Belgium, SO2,(sulfur dioxide), and particulate matter combined with high relative humidity and caused 65 deaths in less than 5 days (Christoforou, 2004).…
