Air Pollution

“Studies show that transportation sources such as cars, trucks, buses, ships and trains account for 90% of the cancer risk associated with air pollution” (europa.eu). Air pollution is the introduction into the atmosphere of chemicals, particulates, or biological materials that cause discomfort, disease, or death to humans, damage other living organisms such as food crops, or damage the natural environment or built environment. The Earth is surrounded by a blanket of air that’s polluted with gases from the atmosphere such as the industries, agriculture and traffic, as well as energy generation. However, some of these substances are not damaging to air quality, but will form harmful air pollutants by reactions with other substances that are present in air. For example, the air humans breathe cause severe damage to liver, lungs causing heart cancer all over the world. What causes air pollution, what are the effects, and how can it be prevented is the primary focus of air pollution. First, air pollution is caused mainly by natural events that pollute the air including carbon dioxide, gasoline burning engines, and power plants. In particular Carbon dioxide, and power plants are pollutants to some but to other it’s life. For example, pumping gas at a gas station pollutes the air while giving someone transportation needed to function in life. As a result this cause major problems that are very difficult to manage when transportation is used in everyday life. Humans mainly rely heavily on vehicles and engines for transporting people, good and services. “Reports find that over 13,000 deaths each year are attributable to fine particle pollution from U.S. power plants” (catf.us). Second, the effects of air pollution are global warming, change in weather and Sulfur dioxide. The three main effects of polluted air is an unpleasant feeling that creates respiratory diseases like cough, cold, asthma. However, global warming is one important effect in the world where high temperatures cause people to dehydrate throughout the day. Change in weather causes different masses in air to change based on temperatures from global warming. For example, rising sea level due to thermal expansion of the ocean. Sulfur dioxide is a component build from smog, and closely related chemicals are known primarily as a cause of acid rain. The effects of air pollution have a variety of air pollutants known or suspected harmful effects on human health and the environment. Third, the solution to prevent air pollution will be very complicated. Prevention interventions are always the best solution to prevent air pollution based on all the effects going on. Encouraging family, peers and friends to use the bus, and ride bikes, and walk will prevent less fumes on the streets. Hence, walking to the store will cause less fumes from gas and electricity on the street. Recycle paper, plastic, glass bottles, cardboard, and aluminum cans, this conserves energy and reduces production emissions. On the other hand, a power plant is an electric generating plant that produce electricity using magnetic conduction. This plant can be prevented by using low sulfur fuels such as electricity, and carbon dioxide. The cost it will take to prevent air pollution will be hard but if people all can minimize the use of gas, cars, and power plants this problem can be resolved. In conclusion air pollution is caused by a multitude of different things in today’s world. “Some of the pollutant such as, gases and particles from volcanic eruptions, and smoke from forest fires caused by natural processes (lightning strikes” (Zannetti 1).

Air pollution can affect an individual’s health in many different ways; from short–term exacerbations of illness to long-term effects. Individuals are affected by air pollution in different ways. Short-term effects include ear, nose and throat irritation, and upper respiratory infections. Long-term effects include respiratory disease, lung disease, and heart disease. People who have asthma can experience complications when the air is polluted. In the great "Smog Disaster" in London in 1952, four thousand people died in a few days due to the high concentrations of pollution (How can air pollution hurt my health?).…

Air pollution can harm animals, plants and bodies of water. There is a substantial amount of pollution that comes from man-made sources such as from factories, cars, planes and trains that have an effect on the quality of air we breathe. These conditions can reduce life spans and cause chronic respiratory issues in animals and humans. Some of the chemicals that are associated with air pollution have been known to contribute to birth defects, cancer and other damages to the human body. According to Ferrell, Fraedrich and…

Air pollution affects everything from agriculture and ecosystems to human health, on a global scale. The five major air pollutants are ground-level ozone, particulate matter, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide (Donnatelle, 2010). A majority of these pollutants are the result of human action. One example being coal power plants. These plants release greenhouse gas emissions and particle air pollution. The burning of the coal creates pollutant byproducts. Other forms of industrial pollution, exhaust fumes, burning wood, and several forms of indoor air pollutants result in air contamination. The combination of various air contaminates can be extremely toxic. The pollutants irritate the lungs and may even cause respiratory diseases and cancer in humans (Donnatelle, 2010).…

In our state we have a growing problem of air pollution. It might not be as clearly visible in some areas as others but the fact is that air pollution is still there affecting us in some way, shape, or form. Air pollution has been known to cause illness and/or death, which many people may not be aware of. There are two main causes of pollution in our state. One main cause of air pollution is natural. Natural pollution is windblown dust, pollen, fog, etc. The other main cause of air pollution is humans. Air pollution caused by humans is the chief concern and the most serious form. Most of the human pollution created is from industrial work, cars, trucks and airplanes. The causes of pollution can go on and on, and scientists constantly are discovering new elements that add to air pollution. The most harmful cause of air pollution is from automobile emissions. People drive automobiles everyday to get from "Point A to Point B". If automobiles did not exist, the air would most likely be cleaner, but we would not be able to travel long distances in short periods.…

The first main reason for air pollution is car exhausts which lead to about 45 to 50 % of the total air pollution. It is formed due to the manufacture of unburned fuel in the form of oxides of Nitrogen and hydrocarbons. These black gases produced by unfiltered car exhaust may bring many health problems upon people such as asthma or in extreme cases, could eventually lead to difficulty in breathing. One of the hydrocarbons produced is Carbon monoxide (CO) which is one of the most dangerous gases resulting in many health problems. Also this can affect the younger society mostly by making them disable as it cause major problems to the brains.…

Air lets our living planet breathe—it's the mixture of gases that fills the atmosphere, giving life to the plants and animals that make Earth such a vibrant place. Broadly speaking, air is almost entirely made up of two gases (78 percent nitrogen and 21 percent oxygen), with a few other gases (such as carbon dioxide and argon) present in absolutely minute quantities. We can breathe ordinary air all day long with no ill effects, so let's use that simple fact to define air pollution, something like this:…

Air pollution or atmospheric pollution is mainly caused by the gases given out by burning petroleum products, coal, firewood etc. Vehicles emit large amounts of gaseous pollutants into the air. The exhaust gases from automobiles and factories add to the air, sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, dust etc. Such polluted atmosphere causes acid rain. It is now calculated that the content of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has increased by 25% in the last 100 years. The mean temperature of the atmosphere has increased from .3°C to .7°C during the period. Carbon monoxide leads to respiratory problems and acid rains due to sulphur dioxide damage crops, plants and marble buildings. Smoke causes pollution in…
