Age, Gender and Race: Three Major factors of life.
There are three main factors that have a huge impact on my life: age, gender, and race/ethnicity. These factors have affected everyone in some way within their lifetime. A long time ago black women were used for house work, black men were used for manual labor, white women were kind of just there to please there men, and white men has all of the power. In someway these factors still affect us in todays society. Being an eighteen year old, white, female has its ups and downs. I am going to break it down for you and tell you how my age, gender, and race/ethnicity have affected my life.

First we have age. I am eighteen years old. I love being eighteen years old but sometimes the expectations and stereotypes are just too much. I am now a young adult that is able to buy tobacco and lotto, if I wanted to. I do not buy tobacco or lotto though, because I am expected to always do the right thing. Buying these products wouldnt be the right thing because they are bad for my health. If I am suppose to always do the right thing, then why do I get stereotyped anyways, whether what I do is right or wrong. Mostly elders stereotype me for my age. They say shes too young, naive, or irresponsible. It is not because I have ever done anything wrong in my life but because of my age. Many elders look at my age and say shes young not knowledgeable, which isnt true. I graduated high school. I go to college. I am expected to go to college. If I wasnt going to college I think that I would have a lot more crap coming my way. Many people try to judge me before they know me. Since they know the age frame that I am in, they think they can judge me. But they cant! I wont let it happen any more. I go to college full time and I have two part time jobs. Once people find this out they usually stop talking because they are embarrassed of what they said about me and they usually apologize for judging me in the first place. Everyone knows that being so young and taking on so many responsibilities isnt

Ethnicity and race has had a big influence on peoples' every day life choices. In some way or another, most people will be judged according to their color of their skin or their ethnic background. We live in a society full of different races and cultures affecting the way we interact with each other, as well as influencing our views on equality and differences among the many different races in our society. Often influential media groups and social standards shape our beliefs, also affecting how we interact with cultures different from our own, and how various groups interact with each other. Race and ethnicity may be defined as a type of grouping or classification based on a persons origin of birth and includes their racial appearance, language, religion and culture. Ethnicity can be defined as a social construction that indicates identification with a particular group who share common cultural traits, such as language, religion and traditions.…

Stereotypes and prejudice is something that I have experienced before. Being a single mother with three children is a hard situation to handle sometimes when living in a small town. Those who really know me and my situation know how hard I have worked to provide my children with the necessities they need to survive. Most people assume that I live on state aid. I don’t receive any help from the state, but I have been placed in this “social stereotype” because the media covers topics on this all the time. It’s an unfair situation for me and I have come to the conclusion that no matter how hard I try to prove myself, someone will always think less of me. Trying to change how people view you is a difficult…

At one point in time the U.S. Census defined someone as a "negro" if they were one-sixteenth black. That is, if one of your sixteen great-great grandparents was of African descent (and the other fifteen were of "white" European descent), you were defined as "negro". In Jamaica, people believed to be of "pure" African descent are described as black. People who are bi-racial are usually described as "colored". In Brazil, there are even more differentiations of those believed to be of African descent. The point of all this is that our definitions are culture-bound and socially constructed. They are, therefore, not particularly scientific and change over time. This does not mean that race and ethnicity have no real meaning. They have meaning because we give them meaning.…

There was a time back in grade school when I was people had the unjust judgment of who I am as a person because I was a little different from everyone else. I have always been bigger in size than most people and that hasn’t changed today. I would wear different attire than other people because of the area I grew up in and the size of me. I would also be into hip hop music because of who I grew up with; however, I was the only one that only listened to hip hop because everyone was raised to not listen to the language they spoke in those songs. When I was a kid and didn’t dress or look like everyone else it would be difficult for me to be included in some groups either out of fear by some of the smaller kids or flat out disgust at me being the biggest guy in the class.…

On a nice March midafternoon, I pulled up to an unfamiliar house in a familiar neighborhood. The exterior of the house looked like a normal house, the only thing that was abnormal was the height of the stairs going onto the porch. I walked into the house, and was drawn to the interior of it. The house looked like a stereotypical grandmother’s house: floral wall paper, old furniture, and pictures of grandchildren lining the walls. I tagged along with my dad to a Sunday lunch at the home of RP. RP is the head of my parents religious group, and he had everyone over for a guest speaker the first day I went with my parents to do this project. The only thing I knew going into this house was the description of this unique religious group my parents are a part of. This group is for people who are in late…

I had never completed a IAT test or heard of the IAT test prior to this class. I found several of the IAT categories interesting such as race, age, and religion. I choose the age test and found the test somewhat boring. The first task was to sort words and pictures of faces of both young and old people into two categories young and old. I found it interesting that the pictures of the faces were not a picture of the entire face, only the eye area and nose. I associated wrinkles and frown lines with the face of an old person and the lack of wrinkles and frown lines with the face of a young person. I would like to know if there is a reason why pictures of entire faces…

Stereotypes, social biases, and misinformation are known to impact older adults lives in many different ways. When you are constantly being stereotyped as an older adult it can produce many trust issues. As an older adult, you could miss out on many genuine relationships with people because your trust is gone. Ultimately, an elder won’t be able to focus on building the ABCDE in a new relationship because there mind will be totally consumed with the way people are judging them based on stereotypes. That is why most elders don’t typically have a lot of established relationships with other elders and family. Thus causing a total decrease in an older adult’s self-confidence.…

According to the worksheet, I will live to be 81 years old. I noticed that a lot of factors that influenced longevity involved activities one would not normally associate with how old they will live to. Some of these activities include one’s salary and whether you finished college or received a graduate degree. It surprised me that you will lose years on your life if you get less than seven hours of sleep per night. I expected that a person would lose years due to lack of sleep, but I did not realize how many years. One question I felt the worksheet could add is what the race of the person is. After watching this week’s lecture video I learned that white citizens tend to live longer than other races so race can have an effect on one’s longevity.…

This study supports a prescriptive theory to ageism, primarily assuming violators to be younger people and victims to be elderly people. It describes how opinions about ageism have been traditionally geared towards descriptive stereotypes concerning what elderly people supposively are and introduces the contrasting prescriptive stereotypes that strive to dictate how the elderly should be. This article includes six studies, which tested numerous issues, using hypothetical (vignette) experiments and replicated behavioral interactions. One important finding of the studies showed that the younger participants resented elder violators of prescriptive stereotypes more than the middle-aged and older study participants did. A second finding was that…
