Age Appropriate Movies (Arguemenative Paper)
Age Appropriate
Let’s go to the movies is a phrase most children, and adults for that matter love to hear. Whether you’re interested in romance, comedy, horror, or action, watching them at home just is not the same as sitting in a theater with a bag of popcorn and a large soda. How do we know which movie will best suit us, and which should remain unseen? Well there are ratings for that. As most parents especially those with teens and pre-teens would know there isn't always an agreement on what is appropriate and what is not. Most of the time their taste is older than it should be, in this case things like rated R movies. What is a rated R movie, reasons we have the rating limits, and finally what should be done to protect our youth from seeing things they shouldn't.
According to http://www.mpaa.org/ ratings are divided between five categories ‘G’ or general audience, ‘PG’ or parental guidance suggested, ‘PG-13’ or parents strongly cautioned, ‘R’ or restricted, and finally ‘NC-17’ or no-one 17 and under admitted. Rated ‘R’ movies are not able to be seen by anyone under the age of 17 without adult consent. These movies are rated as ‘R’ because they contain adult material. Included in that would be obscene language, violence, nudity, drug abuse, and adult themes. This is a warning to all parents to make sure the movie that their children at watching is something that should be seen by them based on their age and maturity level.
Being that many of our youth is easily influenced by what they seen around them this can include what they view in movies, which is a solid reason to why most teens under the age of 17 shouldn’t be subjected to what rated ‘R’ movies have to offer. Parents have a tendency to monitor what their children watch at home, and this allows them to have better control over what they are able to see in public as well. There are many movies that contain dangerous stunts and actions; this would be something that if seen by an easily influenced crowd

Censorship is seen all over society in today’s world. Why do you think that there are ratings for movies? It is well aware that not all movies are appropriate. For everyone in general public. These “mature” scenes are therefore viewed in a private theatre which only those of the mature age can observe. If this point of censorship were not valid in today’s society, there would be no need for ratings and movies would just be played on an outdoor screen, available for all to see!…

From the start of filming industry to present day, Ageism, or known as age inequality, has been roaming around. Women especially were discriminated more than men in the film industry. Out of the 127 nominees for the 2015 Oscars, only 25 were female (Walker). The rate of age inequality is still increasing, it's time to step up. "Ageism is prevalent in our industry and it's like a silent killer, like cancer, and it gets worse every year."(Richman).…

Their minds are blurred from what is real and unreal which is when the viewing of a horror movie becomes a problem to the child. Not only do horror movies affect them mentally, and emotionally, but it can also take a physical toll on the body, such as: increased heart rate, insomnia, not wanting to eat, and catching a fever and or the chills. Horror movies affect everyone differently….. Person “A” could watch a horror movie and compare it to riding a roller coaster ride, while person “B” is not thinking of it as a thrill, but is just terrified. It is like this because it all depends on how vulnerable the person is to stress and anxiety. Although people all deal with horror movies differently, in the end, these movies all do have the same negative impacts on the viewer no matter the age. The younger the viewer, the worse the symptoms become later on. It’s easy to say “ well then, i’ll just not let my child watch horror movies anymore! Problem solved.” Well, not exactly.. The television industry has become so lenient with what they are allowing to be viewed on their network, even the kid friendly channels such as Nickelodeon still manages to have vulgar images sneak in on their shows unintentionally, so it almost becomes impossible to get away from. Horror movies affect a child’s mind a perception of violence. Not only does it affect them now, but can carry with them to…

    Moral Decline in America

    • 942 Words
    • 4 Pages

Movies and television are an obvious part of everyday American life; however with such a habit of watching the screen, one’s mind has the power to be influenced and their morality to be questioned. It has been recognized that the average American child spends at least 28 hours a week, either watching T.V., surfing the web, etc. “The average American will also witness approximately 20,000 simulated deaths in his or her lifetime. Violence has been so glamorized that it can be found almost everywhere in media” (Parents). While this data should be shocking, it is really no surprise that this is the kind of media one’s mind is being exposed to. Because of the moral decline taking place in the United States, most any child would not view televised violent death as anything grotesque while decades ago such violence would never be exposed to the young mind, or any mind for that matter. America seems willing to sacrifice its views and others morals for the gain of the money made by these movies and T.V. shows. Movie ratings have recently been viewed by much of the public as skewed. Movie producers and raters make it their goal to make what could be an R rated movie a PG-13, so as to attract a wider spectrum of viewers. “These restrictions can severely limit the amount of money your film will make, as teens form a huge part of movie audiences” (Parents). The morals…

A rating system for film has been around for quite a while. Since 1926, the film industry has been rated in some manner. Back in 1926, much more was banned sexually and in terms of violence. “For almost 40 years the US film industry was governed by the Motion Picture Production Code, which banned nudity, drug use, religious ridicule, disrespect for the law and other depictions in film that would have the effect of lowering society’s moral standards” ( Feiser, np). Many movies back them were quite subtle compared to today’s day and age. Many filmmakers didn’t get adventuress and stayed well within the parameters of the rules because our society was more modest and pure. There was a much harsher strain on sexuality. “Romantic scenes were heavily scrutinized to uphold ‘the sanctity of the institution of marriage’ and ‘excessive and lustful kissing,…

Movies are a great way to escape reality and slip into a “fantasy land” for a couple of hours. They allow us to relive our childhood and often bring back positive and negative memories. Movies are a way to relax and just sit back to enjoy what the film has to offer. All movies have a rating such as, G, PG, PG-13, and R. Typically, a six year old is not going to be viewing a film or show that is targeted for teenagers. Although that idea seems absurd, six year olds are indefinitely watching these programs.…

Violent and bloody gore movies are awesome to us teens these days. In the “Kids are Kids” article by Lundstorm violent TV shows have influenced a preponderance amount of youth violence (Lundstorm2). It is the parents fault if their teen is violent because they let them watch violent movies and TV shows. The other reason it is the parents fault is because they did not set boundaries for those kids. If guardians would set a parental control so their children could not see those cruel disturbing things, parents would not have to worry. Parents are very agitated and troubled when their child is being tried as an adult. They say it is the media to blame,…

    The Problems of Censorship

In today’s entertainment driven world, the lack of censorship is a major problem. Because neither parents nor the media can come to an agreement, children have virtually free access to inappropriate material. Through internet, movies, video games, and other forms of media, the ease of access to such material is shocking. The content being released and accepted by society is resulting in moral decay and the lack of guidance from parents increases the chance for kids to be influenced by that kind of inappropriate content. Using stricter rules and parental guidance with regards to questionable lyrics, television, video games, and other such things will result in less underage exposure and a mutual benefit for both media and parents.…

    Censorship In America

Censorship is an action that may seem well thought out, but is actually an ineffective and impractical stance of approaching violence in movies. Instead of developing solutions on how to shelter society, one should devote time to educating the youth on the dangers of violence and teach them the difference between fantasy and reality. This way, the United States of America will be safer and keep its capitalistic mindset in…

When speaking about teenagers attending rated R movies, past president Bill Clinton said, “One can value the 1st amendment right to free speech and at the same time care for and act with restraint”. Clinton was the one who proposed that all people under 17 would have to be accompanied by an adult to a rated R (Restricted) movie. Although some people believe that teens should be able to go to see these movies alone, they do not have enough maturity and good judgment to have this right. Kids and teenagers should not be allowed to go to a rated R movie without a parent or guardian. Restricted movies have a direct link with violence, smoking, and drinking in teens. Also, content in rated R movies is not appropriate for kids and young teens.…

It becomes more difficult to decide if and what should be censored when it comes to children. Children are trying to grow up too fast anymore and when you expose them to these movies and music that can be extremely inappropriate, it can be hard to decide if they should be able to watch and listen to. That is not to say that children should not learn about and respect art. Many teenage American girls are dressing more…

Teens have three great advantages over adults for movie studios. First, they tend to predictably cluster around the same TV programs on cable networks, such as MTV, which make them much less costly to reach than moviegoing adults who, if they watch TV at all, tend to be scattered among the most expensive programming in prime time. Second, once in multiplexes, teens tend to consume prodigious quantities of popcorn and soda, which is a powerful attraction to the theater chains that book movies for a wide opening. Third, teens buy electronic games, sports equipment, fast food, and other licensable items, which make them an appealing audience to merchandising partners with the capability of providing the multimillion dollar “tie-in” that help publicize studio movies.…
