Agarwood Case Study
Aquilaria Malaccensis is the main producer of agarwood and this species has largest population in Malaysia. The resinous part of Aquilaria genus is more recognized as Agarwood, Gaharu, Aloeswood, Eaglewood, Jinkoh and Oud (Nor Azah et. al, 2014). The term agarwood is commonly used to refer to the resinous heartwood from the Aquilaria trees.

Agarwood is a resinous wood substance that is produces by the trees as a non-specific host response to wounding, insects or microbial invasion (Mohamed et al., 2014). The production of oleo-resin occur when a tree primary defense mechanism is inhibited due to any attack and it will response to injury by producing the resin which acts as a chemical barrier to attacks by fungi, insects, and others. In this research, the heartwood of the trees gets inoculated by a fungus, Fusarium. The trees give response by producing a resin high in volatile organic compounds resin which helps in inhibiting the growth of fungal (Benedict, 2009). The oil is extracted from the fragrant resin found in the agarwood tree trunk. In medicine, perfumery and other aromatic products, the resin and its oil are very valuable for their use.

Agarwood oil is a highly prized type of oil due to its unique aroma. The presence of certain chemical compounds has contributed to the unique aroma and quality of the agarwood resin and oil. Sesquiterpenes and chromones have been reported to be the main active components that play important roles in giving the aroma and pleasant odor of agarwood (Hashim et al., 2014). This paper presents a study on identification of agarwood oil compound specifically on Aquilaria Malaccensis. The study is based on GC-MS data on chemical compounds of agarwood

Xanthine oxidase inhibitor acts by preventing the biosynthesis of uric acid from purine in the body (Unno et al., 2004) and either by raising the excretion of uric acid or decreasing the uric acid production helps to lower the risk of gout (Umamaheswari et al., 2007). Uricosuric drugs which increase the urinary excretion of uric acid, or XO inhibitors which block the terminal step in uric acid biosynthesis, can lower the plasma uric acid concentration, and are generally employed for the treatment of gout (Terkeltaub, 2009). Allopurinol is known as a synthetic XO inhibitor and moztly used in the therapeutic and clinical management of gout (Nakamura, 1991). However, allopurinol generates superoxide and can cause a rash to some people as they are allergic to allopurinol (Berry & Hare,

Uloric (febuxostat) is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor indicated for the chronic management of hyperuricemia in patients with gout. Its mechanism of action is the inhibition of xanthine oxidase, the enzyme responsible for the conversion of hypoxanthine to xanthine to uric acid. At therapeutic concentrations it does not inhibit other enzymes involved in purine and pyrimidine synthesis. Its key pharmological action is that is reduces serum uric acid levels in the body.…

Oral treatment includes anticholinergic agents such as glycopyrrolate, oxybutinin or amitriptyline which represent the main systemic medications for hyperhidrosis. They inhibit the neuroglandular signaling by blocking the binding of acetylcholine to its receptor in the nerve cells [1, 3, 5]. Their use is usually restricted to primary focal hyperhidrosis due to frequent adverse effects (dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, and urinary retention) [1-3, 5].…

Patients suffer from severe pain and swelling in certain joints as the abundance of uric acid that form into crystals lodge into the joint. This can caused when the kidney is incapable of filtering out the uric acid from the blood and excreting it as urine. However, since uric acid has Iimited solubility in bodily fluids, gout is primarily caused when hyperuricemia occurs where the high levels of uric acid exceeds the rate of it solubility in the bloodstream. Hence, due to this homeostatic imbalance of purines, the remaining undissolved uric acid forms into these…

For example, a class of drugs that may be prescribed is corticosteroids. Corticosteroids are anti-inflammatory agents that may be injected or taken orally, although, they are not recommended to take more than two to four treatments per year (Teitel, 2012). Limited doses of corticosteroids are recommended because steroids can suppress the immune system causing danger to the patient. Also, another medication option is biologic drugs which include Enbrel, Humira, Rituxan, and Actemra that can only be given through injection or intravenous (IV) infusion. Nurses should educate the patient to watch for signs and symptoms of infection at the IV site which include redness, swelling, warmth, pain and tenderness. Biologic drugs can improve the quality of life for autoimmune arthritis patients, but the side effects can be very serious. Nurses should educate of the possible side effects of biolytic drugs which also include immune suppression allowing the patient to become more susceptible to infections (Teitel, 2012). Furthermore, disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) are another class of medication. It is used to slow the progression of the disease and also reduce signs and symptoms (“Arthritis” 2009). Different types of DMARDS include methotrexate, penicillamine, and sulfasalazine (Teitel, 2012). If non-pharmaceutical or pharmaceutical interventions are ineffective, surgery can be…

allelochemicals. One of them is the Eucalyptus deglupta, which is unique among eucalyptus. Unlike other members of the genus, rainbow eucalyptus hails from the Philippine Islands; specifically, the island of Mindanao, which is why the tree is also referred to as a Mindanao gum. According to the study of Bughio, Mangrio, Abro, Jahangir and Bux, it has been found that Eucalyptus species release volatile compounds such as benzoic, cinnamic and phenolic acids which inhibit growth of crops and weeds growing near it. Phenolic acids and volatile oils released from the leaves, bark, and roots of certain Eucalyptus spp. have deleterious effects on other plant species. In the study of Bughio et al., using the eucalyptus camaldunlensis as allelopathy agent against Acasia nilotica, The Eucalyptus leaf litter and leaf litter extract also caused significant reduction in seedling vigour index of Acacia nilotica. Based on the results of their study it is concluded that allelopathy is a concentration-dependent phenomenon, as the concentration of the E. camaldulensis treatments increases, its effect increases. The leaf litter and leaf litter extract affected all the parameters as compared to the control. Based on the study of Anwar, Eucalyptus has been known to be able to excrete a substance harmful called allelopathy, to other vegetation. To encourage the establishment of timber estate, it is necessary to examine the effects of allelopathy on other plants, whenever mixed plantation is carried out. Three kind of plant portion (fresh leaf, leaf litter and root) from two Eucalyptus species (Eucalyptus alba and E. deglupta) which are suspected to have allelopathy and five extract concentrations (0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%) were used as treatment for the growth of Shorea palembanica seedlings. The experiment result showed that Eucalyptus was allelopathic against Shorea seedlings. Of the three plant portions, the fresh leaf had the most potential to obstruct the growth of Shorea seedlings.…

As can be seen, the general procedure of changes in different drying methods is that the lowest percentage of essential oils is associated with a temperature of 60°C in the hot air, infrared and ultrasound methods, and while the highest essential oil content is related to the ultrasound method at 40°C. Therefore, according to the results of the research, using the high temperatures in the hot air, infrared and ultrasound dryers gives rise to reducing the yields of essential oils of the valuable medicinal plant. These results are in line with those of other researchers. The results of Fathi and Sefidkon's study (2012) based on the statistical analysis of the yields of essential oils of Eucalyptus showed that the least amount of essential oils was associated with the dried sample in an oven at 50°C (2.30%). Moreover, the results of Hameruni-Salami' study (2011) based on the effect of drying on the yields of essential oils of laurel tree showed that increasing a temperature in the infrared method from 45°C to 65°C reduced the amount of essential oils. However, the low temperature in the ultrasonic dryer compared with the hot air and infrared drying methods gives rise to accelerating the drying process. In addition, there is statistically significant differences in the amount of essential oils obtained from the hot air and infrared drying…
