The title of the film I picked was “A Class Divided”.

2. Why did you pick this film over the others offered?

The title of this lecture is “Black Moviegoing in 1930s Atlanta: The Challenge of Researching Reception History”. At the beginning of the lecture, Dr. Matthew Bernstein briefed the history of that period. Then, he talked about It Happened One Night, The Barretts of Wimpole Street, and Imitation of Life. Afterwards we watched two short film clips of them (Imitation of Life and The Barretts of Wimpole Street). Dr. Matthew Bernstein mainly focused on the film – Imitation of Life, which talks a story about a black mother and a white mother. Also, this is the only one film that shows black people as normal people. In addition, he talked a little bit about The Barretts of Wimpole Street, and analyzed why this film would be popular at that time.…

It was only a year ago when I was faced with making a very important decision that would affect me for the rest of my life. It was time for me to choose an institution of higher learning to continue my studies that would eventually lead me to my career. My decision wasn’t simply which university or college to choose, but as a young black student, whether to choose a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) or a Predominately White Institution (PWI). This would take me on an insightful journey and I would make my decision after discussing the pros and cons of both institutions and through interactions with students, faculty and staff. Before too long it was clear to me that “white campuses provide superior environments for black educational development” and provide the best eventual opportunities and benefits for the student (Allen, W.R.).…

Over the course of over one and a half decades, there has been an apparent transformation within the dominion of African American theater. Often when a person thinks of discrimination, they think of discrimination against different races, however, there are different types of discrimination that exists in our society, regardless of skin color, wealth or social status. There are different types of discrimination such as, race, religion, sexual orientation, height, weight and more (Dempsey pg. 197). There are no limits where discrimination takes place and unfortunately it can take place at the store, church, on the street and even in the work place.…

In the past, there were direct discrimination toward African Americans such as police brutality and racial stereotype about African Americans. Policemen stopped the marching violently when they knew that those African Americans are protesting the rights they always deserve. People produced songs with lyrics like “if you are white, you are fine; if you are black, go back, go back”, and they published cartoons that had African Americans been drew in an ugly and terrifying way. Those are the dues African Americans have to pay, and they suffered all these terrible acts of the white people in order to survive in the United States. This film uses the unavoidable facts about the discriminations African Americans suffered to emphasize the big ideas that African Americans have done a lot of effort to gain their freedom should always be memorable by the people of the world.
