Studies conducted since the 1980's that observe the discrimination of minorities through online association’s show that discrimination can have an effect on individuals who have been subjected to this negative treatment. Discrimination is described as the treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on their merit. The unfair treatment of a person, racial group, or minority based on prejudice. The multiple authors' of the journal article Online Racial Discrimination and the Protective Function of Ethnic Identity and Self-Esteem for African American Adolescents by Tynes, Brendesha M., Adriana J. Umaña-Taylor, Chad A. Rose, Johnny Lin, and Carolyn J. Anderson in Development Psychology give examples of different …show more content…
A study is broken down in different parts to measure the analysis. In the Online Victimization Scale (Tynes, Rose, & Williams, 2010) a study on online racial discrimination refers to disparaging text and images along with symbols. This studied how a person reacts to being addressed online in any of these ways. The results show that 68% of adolescent samples' in the study had never been subjected to online discrimination whereas 12.8% had experienced some form of discrimination once, 8.8% a few times a year, 4.8% a few times a month, 3.2% a few times a week, and 1.6% at least once a day.
