Afermative Action Debate
As I began this assignment I was already fairly certain where I stood on the argument/debate of Affirmative Action. However; part of the college experience is to further expose and broaden ones vantage point, perspective, and understanding of the interworking of the world that surrounds them. So, in an effort to exercise a proper college experience, I decided to take a deep breath in, a step back, and absorb as many possible side of the debate before coming to my final decision on where I stand. First, I am not going to try and refute that discrimination is not an occurrence that is found in modern day society when it is. With that said I do not believe that discrimination is something that rules, or plays any significant role in today’s society that might cause the, “playing field” to be uneven. If discrimination was still a big player in today’s society America would not have so many influential people or both minority and the female sex including; Stevie Wonder (musician), Beyonce’ (musician), Colin Powel (65th Secretary of State), Barak Obama (44th President), Jessie Jackson (Shadow Senator), Condoleezza Rice (66th Secretary of State), Oprah Winfrey (Entertainer), Jennifer Lopez (musician), Julian Castro (San Antonio, Mayor), Janet Napolitano (Secretary of Department of Homeland Security), Jill Abramson (Executive Editor of New York Times), Bruce Lee (Martial Artist), Yo-Yo MA (musician) . . .etc. If discrimination was still something to be feared and fought against in today society most, of the previously stated individuals would have made it where they are today.
One way that Affirmative Action is used today is for when people of various minorities apply and or get accepted in college. One side of the argument is that minorities have a harder time doing so, which I believe to be completely untrue. Colleges actually tend to accept people of minority and of the female sex before accepting anyone else. Colleges do this in order to prove that they have

Also majorities look down on the minorities who get into colleges and get jobs over them by saying that they only got the job because someone just needed to get the spot filled so that they wouldn’t get shut down. This makes the minority feel worse about themselves because really don’t know if they got into the school or got the job based on their own merits or not. People in todays society want to make the most money possible so they will hire who they believe will do the best job whether it be an African American woman or a middle aged white man.
