ADVERTISING STRATEGIES OF A COMPANY

Over a century ago, Harper’s Weekly commented that advertisements were “a true mirror of life, a sort of fossil history from which the future chronicler, if all other historical monuments were to be lost, might fully and graphically rewrite the history of our time.” Today advertising is a part of our everyday life. It is all around us. We cannot escape looking at it or listening to it. Even if we are not consciously looking at it or listening to it, the message of advertising reaches and influences us. It is often recorded somewhere at the back of our minds and is recalled when we are buying something or looking for a particular service.
From morning to night, we are using advertised goods and services. We start the morning with a cup of tea or coffee, use toothpaste and toothbrush on our teeth, at breakfast we have bread, butter, etc. our workplace is also full of machines, computers, etc which are the advertised goods.
Advertising has very much become a part of our lives. With the market glutted with endless brands of products, the consumer is influenced largely by advertising in his decision- making process. The industry too leans very heavily on advertising to survive in the ruthlessly competitive market. Advertising is a measure of the growth of civilisation and an indication of the striving of the human race for betterment and perfection. Advertising has both forward and backward linkages in the process of satisfaction across the entire spectrum of needs. The explicit function of advertising is to make potential audience aware of the existence of the product, service or idea which would help them fulfil their felt needs and spell out the differential benefits in a competitive situation. On advertising also lies the onus, at least marginally, of motivating prospects to strive for creation of resources for fulfilling the new needs or to aid reallocation of available resources. Nielson Company reports that, by the age of sixty-five, the average U.S. citizen will have spent nine years of his or her life watching television—twenty-eight hours a week, two months a year.     ‘Advertising’ the word originated from the Latin word ‘adverto’, which means to turn around. The root of advertising can be found in ancient times such as ancient Egyptian used papyrus to make sales messages and wall posters, commercial messages and political campaign found in the ruins of Pompeii and ancient Arabia, lost and found advertising on papyrus in ancient Greece and Rome, wall painting for commercial advertising in ancient India (Mogel, 1993). Advertising defined by Belch & Belch (2004) as a paid form of communication through nonpersonal components such as T.V, radio, newspaper and magazines about an organization, product, service or idea by an identified sponsor; likewise Kumar & Mittal (2002) defined advertising as controlled, identifiable information of products, services to persuade customers through mass communication media. Therefore, from it can be said that advertising basically aims to create awareness through popularisation of the products among customers and persuade them to purchase it. But the common debate today is that, how advertising works? Fill (1999) suggested two polarised views regarding this subject: the first is referred to strong theory of advertising and the second one is referred as weak theory of advertising. In this essay, these two theories are discussed thoroughly to understand how advertising works; furthermore some models of each of the theory are also discussed to extend the understanding.     Advertisements are part and parcel of our lives. Perhaps, they are one of the most decisive and, at the same time, imperceptible factors moulding and channelling our “purchasing habits,” so to speak. On the face of it, advertisements promote products and services; they create demand by dint of inducing and increasing consumption. Yet, the ways in which they convey their messages have a profound effect on all aspects of our lives: our happiness, our culture, family and interpersonal relations, business, stereotypes, wealth and status, individuality, and so forth. According to Leiss et al. (1990: 1), advertising is ‘a “privileged form of discourse”’, in that it can attract our attention, insinuating itself into our thought processes and carving out a niche in our lives. As we shall see, advertisements succeed in selling us a lot more than merely products; in fact, they contrive to reconstruct our relations to things and other people—in short, they interfere with our sense of identity, they equate us with things, and manipulate us. Williamson’s observation succinctly encapsulates their power: ‘Advertisements are selling us something else besides consumer goods: in providing us with a structure in which we, and those goods, are interchangeable, they are selling us ourselves’ (Williamson, 1978: 13). In the present study we are concerned with how advertisements, or rather ‘ad men’, to quote Packard (1957), persuade us to buy their products, and exploit our “hidden” needs—both processes taking place beneath our level of awareness.…
