BIOLOGY 101 COURSE SYLLABUS FOR FALL 2012

Course Description

Biology 101 is the first of a two-semester introductory course sequence designed primarily for science majors. It covers some central concepts in biology. Topics include molecules, cells, enzymes, photosynthesis, cellular respiration, cellular reproduction, genetics, and biotechnology. The laboratory includes basic laboratory skills such as safety, microscope use, and measurement, and it reinforces topics discussed in lecture.

This course meets the SUNY General Education course requirements for natural sciences.

Course Requirements

Textbook – Textbook – Reece et al. Campbell, Biology, 9th edition

Access code to Mastering Biology. This comes with new textbooks. It must be purchased separately if you purchased a used textbook without the code. It can be purchased online (www.masteringbiology.com) or in the bookstore.

Splash-proof goggles

Access to the Internet.

The Biology Web contains the lab manual, lecture notes, and other resources needed for the course. A link to faculty websites can be found on the college home page (http://www.clinton.edu/).

Students will be required to use the Angel online course management system for some of the assignments in this course.

Corequisite: ENG 101 or equivalent is a corequisite.

    The following summary tries to explain what is meant by the specification statements for the SNAB AS course. SNAB includes a lot of material because it helps you to understand ideas or because it is interesting, but it can be a little confusing when it comes to knowing what to revise. This brief summary will not help you to understand the biology and it is not intended to replace a revision programme, but it might help to sort the wood from the trees a little. Remember that examination questions must be set so that you could do them with no reference to the SNAB course materials. Only the statements in bold below can be examined.
