KINETIC STUDY OF LIQUID-PHASE ADSORPTIVE REMOVAL OF HEAVY METAL IONS BY ALMOND TREE (TERMINALIA CATAPPA L.) LEAVES WASTE
ABSTRACT. The kinetic sorption of five metal ions - Al3+, Cr6*, Zn2+, Ag+ and Mn2+ - from aqueous solution onto almond tree leaves (ATL) waste in single component system has been studied. The experimental data was analyzed in terms of intraparticle diffusion and rate of adsorption, thus comparing transport mechanism and chemical sorption processes. The sorption rates based on the pseudo-second order rate constants for the five metal ions are 0.018 (Al3+), 0.016 (Cr6+), 0.023 (Zn2+), 0.021 (Ag+) and 0.022 (Mn2+) g/mg.min. The adsorption rates are rapid and within 180 min of agitation more than 85 percent of these metal ions has been removed from solution by the ATL waste biomass. The kinetic data suggest that the overall adsorption process is endothermic, and that the rate-limiting step is a surface diffusion controlled process. The results from this study have revealed that the ATL waste, which is hitherto an environmental nuisance, has the ability to adsorb metal ions from solution and the data are relevant for optimal design of wastewater treatment plants. The low cost and easy availability of ATL waste make potential industrial application a strong possibility.

INTRODUCTION
Adsorption kinetic studies are important in predicting the rate of pollutant removal from aqueous systems. Kinetic studies provide information for selecting optimum operating conditions, identifying reaction pathways, understanding rate-limiting steps and are also essential for scaling-up of laboratory studies to industrial applications. The use of cheap adsorbents for the treatment of aqueous effluents to remove inorganic and organic pollutants has been recognized as a major development in the area of biosorption during the past ten years [1-10].     Co-processing of wastes in cement kiln is emerging as one of the environment friendly alternative disposal method in the recent years. Distillery spent wash has high organic content and dissolved inorganic solids which require careful handling and proper disposal to avoid damage to the environment. Presently it is being used on to land to provide nutrient value, though it contaminates both the ground water and surface water sources, as most often it is practiced in non-scientific manner. The adverse effect of spent wash disposal, via bio-composting is magnified during the rainy season. Concentration of spent wash in multiple effect evaporators and its subsequent incineration is also being practiced. However, it is not found technically and economically feasible in majority of cases. Hence, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) proposed, co-processing of concentrated spent wash in cement kiln. There are around 400 distillery units in India, with a total production capacity of about 3800 million litres of alcohol. Average generation of spent wash is around 812 litres / litre of alcohol produced, depending on continuous or batch process and quality of molasses used etc. Thus the co-processing of spent wash concentrate in cement kiln has following benefits: (a) wastes are destroyed at a higher temperature of around 1200-1400 C and longer residence time, (b) inorganic content gets fixed with the clinker apart from using the energy content of the wastes leaving no residue behind (c) the acidic gases, if any generated during co-processing gets neutralized, since the raw material in cement kiln is alkaline in nature, and (d) such phenomenon also reduces resource requirement. This study shows the potential use of fish scalesof telleosts chanos and Tilapia nilotica as natural sorption materials in the recovery of astaxanthin. Synthetic astaxanthin dissolved in water was made to flow in "Fish Scale Adsorption Apparatus" (FSAA) containing unshredded or shredded scales. Comparison of treatments based on the discoloration of filtrate to be released from the FSAA and the length of time the flow lasted revealed that shredded tilapia scales were most effective in retaining the pigments. Scanning electron micrographs of the surface of tilapia scales revealed porous tooth-like structures called sclerits. These pores along with particles scattered on the interspacing between sclerits’ particles were inferred to bind the pigment. Based on the effective filtration features of the tilapia fish scales, it is suggested that the scales be used in wastewater treatment of different factories.
