Adrienne Rich Storm Warnings Essay
Adrienne Rich uses “Storm Warnings” to create a connection between the storm that is raging outside and the emotional storms inside her heart. She says that the oncoming storm is similar to “weather in the heart” (13) and that the wind “moves inward toward a silent core of waiting” (9), both imply a strong emotional component to her descriptions. In making this link, Rich gives readers an idea that we are have no power to control heartbreak, depression, and other kinds of emotional upheavals, just like homeowners are powerless to control the storms blowing through. We can only be patient and wait for disaster to pass, and then pick up the pieces to rebuild
