Adjectives

What are they? In Spanish as well as in English, an adjective describes the person, things, etc. that a noun refers to. We use adjectives to say what a person is like or seems like Adjectives can give us information about:
• Quality
• Size
• Age
• Temperature
• Shape
• Colour
• Origin
An adjective can also describe the idea(s) contained in a whole group of words -Robert's ideas about the future are absurd
They can give general or precise information -What 's the car like?

What form do they have?
In English, most adjectives are morphologically invariable whereas in Spanish most of them are inflected for gender and number.

Adjectives in Spanish agree in gender and number with the noun they modify.
- Alumno estudioso
- Alumna estudiosa
If an adjective describes a mixed group (masculine and feminine) then the masculine plural form is used. -Alumnos estudiosos

What uses do they have? In English as well as in Spanish adjectives act:
• as modifiers of nouns or pronouns.
• as complements of either the subject or an object
The function determines their position in the sentence, however, the place the adjectives lake may be different in the Iwo languages.

Kinds
Adjectives in Spanish and English ale classified in the same way:
• Descriptive (calificativos)
• Proper (can be compared to gentilicios)
•Limiting ( Determinativos)
