“Ambition in Macbeth” Most people look at ambition as an amazing trait to have, but this powerful trait can also lead to many problems. Ambition is a strong desire to do or to achieve something, typically requiring determination and hard work. Almost everyone demonstrates this trait in some kind of way, for example most kids have the ambition to be successful or have kids and a family when they grow up. I agree that it is good to be ambitious in life because ambition is what you’re passionate about; you have to have a goal to succeed. I also agree that you won’t get anywhere in life without being ambitious or goal-oriented about something. Ambition can be looked at in two ways; it’s up to that person to use it for good or for evil. Macbeth and his wife demonstrate this trait in a couple different ways throughout the play of Macbeth. Lady Macbeth is the ambitious person, not so much Macbeth because he didn’t know he was going to be king, but Lady Macbeth thought she was going to be queen. If people weren’t ambitious we wouldn’t have the technology we do and all the things that we use every day such as cars, phones, and computers. So in a way ambition is a great trait to have.
In the play Macbeth ambition is mainly used for evil. Ambition can lead people into dangerous positions, for example when Macbeth kills King Duncan. Macbeth demonstrated ambition when he said, “To alter favor ever is to fear, leave all the rest to me” (Will I, vi, 85-86). He was so ambitious about being the king, that he used his ambition for evil and killed the rightful King of Scotland. That type of ambition is not good for people to have because it leads to complete chaos. Macbeth’s plan may have succeeded for a little bit, but was it really worth it in the end when Macduff came after him? He lost his life just because he wanted to be rich and famous and was too greedy with his ambition. Lady Macbeth also lost her life because she was evil. Is it worth it to lose
