The Great Expectations is a story told by a man and his upbringing. He tells about his childhood and adulthood. Throughout the story many people go through some ups and downs, finding out who they really are, and what others are actually like and who those people truly are. This story teaches the reader a lesson about life and what to expect from some people that we think are close to us and who really care for us, but in reality they don’t. On the other hand we find out who is really there for us and who truly care about us. Phillip Pirrip, also known as Pip, is the narrator and main character of the story. Pip was raised by sister and brother-in-law, Joe Gargery and Mrs. Joe. Pip’s story starts out as a young man and continues throughout his life. Pip is very passionate about what he believes in and wants to improve himself throughout the story. As a young man, Pip is very close to Joe, sees how much Joe cares for Pip, and how much Joe has Pip’s back. “Joe took me on his back again and carried me home.” (Dickens, 39) This shows how much Joe cares for Pip even though Joe is tired as well. Joe is a good-natured person because he is very humble, sympathetic, kind, and is just everything a good person would be. Joe is really humble even when people treat him like chop liver, for example his wife and at times Pip. Joe is also a very kind and sympathetic person. “God knows you’re welcome to have it.” (Dickens, 37) Joe says this to a man who Pip encountered one night at the cemetery and this man is homeless and doesn’t very much, Joe doesn’t want him to starve. Joe is also like Pip’s big brother or best buddy because he has Pip’s back all the time. When Mrs. Joe is mad at Pip, Joe talks to Pip and tells Pip how much Pip reminds him of himself.
