By using similes the author effectively shows her feelings of sadness through losing hope and giving in. The author in “Hands Like Ice” feels that the main character, who has gone through a dramatic stage, was very important to her. She also feels that this person was very dear to them and she didn't realize it until the character passes away. As the author felt overwhelmed by all her emotions, she began to lose hope for her loved one,“I felt like I was in a snowstorm but never let up,”(15). The author compares her feelings to a snowstorm the never ended, this shows that while she was losing…

Initially, the poet employs similes in order to demonstrate his theme of parental love. For example he uses the simile “… your life shines like a jewel, each relapse a flash of light the more endearing” (Stanza 1) proves that the persona genuinely loves his daughter. How does the poet confirm this? By the comparing of Katrina to a jewel, it shows that she is precious and valued to the persona. Through affirming this quote, he is stating that a relapse in Katrina’s health is akin to the adoration readers would have when shining light onto a precious jewel. At a point where one has to surrender this jewel, one will love it even more. That is the poet’s aim in this simile; the closer he gets to losing her, the more he will love her. Due to this technique, the audience can perceive the powerful parental love that the persona has for Katrina by relating it to their love for a jewel. Hence, by using similes the viewers are able to better understand the theme in Katrina.…

“Don’t blame me when he gauges your eyes out” said Jem when introducing the Radley house to Dill. This shows how the town is scared of the Radley family although they don’t know much about them. This is important because without the Radley mystery half of the book wouldn’t have been written. It also shows many different types of rhetorical devices and figurative language.…

For example, Dunbar uses imagery when stating, “And a pain still throbs in the old, old scars, And they pulse again with a keener sting--I know why he beats his wing!”(lines 13-15). Here the author is stating that even when scars from past experiences are long over, they are never forgotten, and they can prohibit a person from fighting injustice because of the trauma that itt can bring. The use of imagery in this quote shows the reader just how damaging unjust actions towards a person can be. Dunbar also uses imagery when stating, “I know why the caged bird sings”(line 21). The author expresses in this quote that he understands why the caged bird sings because he has felt caged or trapped for a long time. The author is trying to get the reader to understand that he knows why the bird sings and the reasons for his unrelentless actions for freedom because he himself has felt the exact same way. He wrote about this bird as if he was putting himself into another’s point of view, but in all reality he wrote the bird as…

Another poetic device Taylor Swift used is imagery. After a flash back to the time she met the man she loves, Swift recalls seeing “the lights… the party, the ball gowns” and seeing him “make your way through the crowd and say hello”. Then it is also at the end of the song when he proposes to her she says, “He knelt to the ground and pulled out a ring”. Taylor Swift is able to evoke an image in the imagination of the listener by using descriptive language. Also, the audience members that have been in similar situations are able to connect with the song and the circumstances. Overall, Taylor Swift’s elegant use of poetic devices enhances the lyrics of “Love Story”.…
