Active and Passive Verb Form
Active / Passive Verb Forms

Sentences can be active or passive. Therefore, tenses also have "active forms" and "passive forms." You must learn to recognize the difference to successfully speak English.

Active Form

In active sentences, the thing doing the action is the subject of the sentence and the thing receiving the action is the object. Most sentences are active.

Basic form: [Thing doing action] + [verb] + [thing receiving action]

Examples: - The professor teaches the students

- Jonh washes the dishes.

Passive Form

In passive sentences, the thing receiving the action is the subject of the sentence and the thing doing the action is optionally included near the end of the sentence. You can use the passive form if you think that the thing receiving the action is more important or should be emphasized. You can also use the passive form if you do not know who is doing the action or if you do not want to mention who is doing the action.

Basic form

[Thing receiving action] + [be] + [past participle of verb] + [by] + [thing doing action]

When writing, you should use parallelism to balance out your sentences, making them flow smoothly for the readers. (Bethel, 2017) The entire written work should be done in the same verb tenses. A good way to grasp the reader's attention is to use specific words, not just general terminology. Active verb usage is another way to give energy to your writing. It is always important to be direct; wordy sentences…

Sometimes the gerund may be used to introduce a noun phrase like, “Ordering in a restaurant is difficult especially when it is crowded.” The average person probably thinks that the gerund is only used in the present tense in order to relate an on going activity. If you were in the process of doing something, you would need to express yourself using the present progressive or present continuous tense. This would also apply to something that is going to happen in the near future. So if I say, “She is playing the guitar,” that is something she is doing at time the person is speaking. The gerund can also be used in the past to generate a sense that the action had occurred then.…

Note: An intransitive verb is an action verb that does not require a direct object or a complement to complete its meaning. The word "intransitive" literally means "does not carry across." Therefore, the action of the verb does not transfer to an object, that is, a person or thing that receives the action of the verb. Often, adverbs or adverb phrases will appear in these sentences to expand the basic meaning of the verb.…

In the first sentence, the person who did the action (your little boy) is the subject, and comes first; then we say what he did (with the verb, broke) and what he did to (the object, my kitchen window). In the second sentence, the opposite happens: we start by talking about my kitchen window (the object of the first the sentence has become the subject of the second); then we say what was done to it, and who this was done by. The first kind of sentence, and the kind of verb-form used in it, are called ‘active’. The second kind of sentence, and the kind of verb-form used, are called ‘passive’. This difference in the verb conjugation is called one of ‘voice’, different from those of tense, aspect and mood. Examples of Active and Passive Voice Active voice describes a sentence where the subject performs the action stated by the verb. In passive voice sentences, the subject is acted upon by the verb. Sentences in Active and Passive Voice Here are examples of sentences written in both the active voice and the passive voice, with the active voice sentence appearing first: Harry ate six shrimp at dinner. (active) At dinner, six shrimp were eaten by Harry. (passive)…
