There are many reasons why a student may be struggling with reading comprehension. One possibility could be the student’s low proficiency in reading fluency. When students struggle to decipher the text they are not focusing on gaining knowledge from what is being read. Leading to the fact that all of the students cognitive ability is being focused into properly reciting the correct words while little effort it put into the meaning of what is being read (Woolley, 2010). Another possible reason for reading comprehension problems may also be related to a lack of prior experiences or a lower socio-economic environment (Jitendra & Gajria, 2011). To be skilled in reading comprehension, it is essential for students to be able to associate the text with their own prior knowledge. If a student has had limited experiences or comes from an upbringing that is dissimilar from what is in the text they are reading, comprehension can be an extremely complicated task.…

However, it is important to note that the five elementary schools identified in this study were originally part of a larger study focusing on the effectiveness of an individualized reading program (Firmender, 2013). Upon identification of the sample varying in demographics such as race, ethnicity, education, and socioeconomic status, the researchers traveled to the five different schools to assess students’ understanding in reading along with their speed and accuracy utilizing two regulated assessments. The research team members and teachers administered the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) reading comprehension subtest (Form A) while only the research team administered the standardized assessment of Oral Reading Fluency (ORF) pretests. Once the students’ read the ITBS material consisting of narrative, poetry, and nonfiction material from science and social studies, their comprehension was assessed through multiple-choice questions over the material. For reading fluency, the test administrators timed each student reading a passage with 250 words for 1-minute for three independent trials increasingly with difficulty. Upon completion of the tests, the researchers translated the raw scores from the ITBS reading comprehension…

First, I will conduct a formative think-aloud assessment that will evaluate the student’s beginning awareness of monitoring comprehension, then instruct the student in a strategic mini lesson that adapts strategies that will support reading comprehension. Afterwards, I will assess and evaluate the student in another think-aloud assessment to see if he/she showed any signs of improvement or were possibly able to adapt any certain learned strategies from the mini lesson to assist in their understanding of the given reading. My overall goal for this study is to adapt the student to use beneficial strategies that can assist in improving their thought process while reading. What I hope to accomplish in this case study is that the student will be able to advance their ability to monitor their own comprehension while reading different…

Comprehension strategy instruction has been proven to assist readers in their understanding of text. As you begin planning to teach comprehension strategies, you should first consider using text that does not exceed your students' word recognition abilities. Otherwise, if the texts are too difficult, your students' attention will be directed to the word level. All of these strategies should be addressed in a before, during, and after reading format. Students must participate in pre-reading activities in order to activate their background knowledge, set a purpose for reading, and promote personal connections/responses and motivation. During reading activities are equally important. They facilitate comprehension while focusing attention, promoting reactions, and allowing for personal responses. Finally, post-reading activities allow students to reflect, analyze and synthesize information, make personal connections/responses, and organize information. In this section, we will highlight a popular technique and discuss how to incorporate it throughout the before, during, and after framework.…

Reading has always been a foundational element of one’s education. Learning to read is intended to provide students with skills that are necessary for proper word recognition and text decoding. The ultimate goal of reading though, is not limited to the recognition of isolated words, but lies in the reader accessing the meaning of the text. Reading comprehension is achieved when words are recognized and their meanings identified, relevant background knowledge is activated and inferences are generated as information is processed during the course of reading. It has also been pointed out that monitoring processes are essential in order to track both ongoing comprehension and the internal consistency of text, allowing the reader to apply repair strategies if there is a danger of comprehension breaking down [1]. Inquiry-based data in the form of surveys will be collected before determining professional development sessions for content-area teachers and again after the implementation of strategies from the professional development sessions. The use of surveys “provide a comprehensive, opinions, or behavior patterns of the population” (Stoica, 2008). The surveys will include ten to fifteen subjective questions and distributed to all content-area teachers in grades six to eight. Items such as system-wide benchmark tests, teacher grade books, unit tests and quizzes, make available a method for determining the effectiveness of the use of reading strategies. My action research statement attempts to answer why seventh-grade students lacked the ability to apply reading comprehension skills when responding to expository texts which caused them to perform below the school system’s benchmark tests. A variety of artifacts that align with my research goals can offer valuable comparison information on this issue.…
