Action Envelopes Case Study
REVIEW OF LITERATURE

According to Sharon Newman (Chief Executive Officer)
Seth NewmanEnvelopes.com is an American envelope and stationery supply company, founded in 1971 as Action Envelope. It transitioned to an online company in 2000. Action Envelope was founded in 1971 in the Queens borough of New York City, New York, by Ken Newman. After his death, the company would be run by his wife, CEO Sharon Newman, and their son, company president Seth Newman. The company was incorporated in 1976.
Prior to moving online it was a smaller company than its competitors, focusing on selling directly to consumers instead of wholesale. The company launched its first website in 2000, and by 2001 was selling directly to consumers, corporations, organizations,

Their use first became widespread in the UK when the British government took monopoly control of postal services and tasked Rowland Hill with its introduction. The new service was launched in May 1840 with a postage-paid machine-printed illustrated (or pictorial) version of the wrapper and the much-celebrated first adhesive postage stamp: the Penny Black- for the production of which the Jacob Perkins printing process was used to deter counter feting and forgery. The wrappers were printed and sold as a sheet of 12, with cutting the purchaser's task. Known as Macready stationery, because the illustration was created by the respected artist William Macready, the envelopes were withdrawn when the illustration was ridiculed and lampooned. Nevertheless the public apparently saw the convenience of the wrappers being available ready-shaped, and it must have been obvious that with the stamp available totally plain versions of the wrapper could be produced and postage prepaid by purchasing a stamp and affixing it to the wrapper once folded and secured. In this way although the postage-prepaid printed pictorial version died ignominiously, the diamond-shaped wrapper acquired de facto official status and became readily available to the public notwithstanding the time taken to cut them out and the waste generated. With the issuing of the stamps and the operation and control of the service (which is a communications medium) in government hands the British model spread around the world and the diamond-shaped wrapper went with

If I were the current CEO for the United States Postal Service, I would be gravely concerned about the future of my business, as it has recently taken a steep plummet from its success and popularity in the 19th and 20th centuries. The USPS is now faced with the decision to renovate itself due to the extreme loss of business as technology takes over the 21st Century. Some say that the USPS should be entirely reconstructed because the business is only headed further downhill, while others say that paper mail is still very practical, more so than e-mail, and we must each write more letters to do our part in reviving the business to profitability again. Because the USPS has been such a vital part of our country through its contribution to communication and employment, the organization needs to stay afloat by cutting back on delivery days, strategically rebranching throughout the country, and recapturing the importance of itself through advertising, in order to adapt to the new technology-based era.…

Nobody truly understands USPS’s logo anymore (Doc. A, Stone). Branding is huge in a large commercial country where people are attracted to what’s on the cover, not what the company is selling. Coming up with a new, creative, hip logo and slogan can only help the slumping business. Also going electronic and staying with the times will improve revenue through the “sell [of] lucrative advertising” (Doc. A, Stone) on online accounts. Also by raising the prices of mail will help. Now it is a cheap “44 cents” (Doc. F, Cullen). Even raising it a dime or few will generate millions more dollars in revenue. This is the aim of reconstructing a business that has gone into a deficit- revenue. It’s the only thing that really matters in a business. Sentimentalists may argue that going electronic is not the same as those “old-fashioned” letters (Doc. F, Cullen). But…

The next major strategy was their location strategy. They liked to place their stores in educated areas as well as areas that have high frequency. They had steady growth in stores numbers except for in 2009 where they closed one location. They have tried to keep the store numbers low focusing on increasing functionality of smaller spaces to save money. This strategy worked great and led into their product line very well.…

Since the beginning, the United States Post Office (USPS) has weathered many harsh climates, long seasons and economic downfalls. In 1775, The United States Congress appointed Benjamin Franklin as the first postmaster general to the United States Postal Service ("Congress Establishes U.S. Post Office ", 2013) Since then, many have followed. Today, the United States Post Office is the largest government business, which is currently having a hard time turning a profit due to competitors such as DHL, FedEx, UPS, electronic payments, and new technology such as email. The post office deals with every aspect of receiving, securing, sorting, moving, and delivering mail to people all over the world. From the neighborly mailman to the friendly office staff many have grown up with, the U.S. Post Office is a part of American history and is in dire need of help. Many middle-aged people probably remember the times when a mail carrier would carry up to 50 plus pounds and possibly walk the lengths of a marathon every day just to deliver…
