How does Shakespeare make Act 1 Scene 5 of Romeo and Juliet dramatically effective?

Romeo and Juliet is a play written by William Shakespeare, which is about the feud of the Capulet’s and Montague’s. Romeo and Juliet fall in love, but find that they are the children of their parents’ enemies. Act 1, Scene 5 is an important scene in the play because it shows a change in relationships which greatly affects how the watching audience sees some of the major characters in the play.

There are many dramatic techniques used in this play, including plenty of dramatic irony. For example, in act one, scene five, the audience know that Romeo and Juliet are from rival families, but they are not aware of this when they first meet, and

    Just before dawn, Romeo prepares to lower himself from Juliet’s window to begin his exile. Juliet tries to convince Romeo that the birdcalls they hear are from the nightingale, a night bird, rather than from the lark, a morning bird. Romeo cannot entertain her claims; he must leave before the morning comes or be put to death. Juliet declares that the light outside comes not from the sun, but from some meteor. Overcome by love, Romeo responds that he will stay with Juliet, and that he does not care whether the Prince’s men kill him. Faced with this turnaround, Juliet declares that the bird they heard was the lark; that it is dawn and he must flee. The Nurse enters to warn Juliet that Lady Capulet is approaching. Romeo and Juliet tearfully part. Romeo climbs out the window. Standing in the orchard below her window, Romeo promises Juliet that they will see one another again, but Juliet responds that he appears pale, as one dead in the bottom of a tomb. Romeo answers that, to him, she appears the same way, and that it is only sorrow that makes them both look pale.     The tragedy of 'Romeo and Juliet' is one of Shakespeare's most famous plays. It was written in the late 16th century. The contemporary society is reflected throughout the text; one in which men rule and women are viewed as possessions. Romeo and Juliet is a play driven through by enmity and conflicts throught Act 3 scenes 5. The play emphasizes a struggle between two or more things. Although the play shows the conflict between the two houses "Montague" and "Capulet” however Act 3 scene 5 concentrates on the inner conflict of the houses especially between "Lord" Capulet and his daughter Juliet. Act 3 scene 5 is a significant scene of this tragic play. One of the primary reasons for this is that the play is acknowledged to be a romance between two lovers, but in this scene Shakespeare has managed to change that by introducing a love tragedy theme in the scene.     Romeo and Juliet, a tragic play written by one of the most famous English writers, Shakespeare, in 1601, is one filled with many conflicts, even starting from the story's background. "From ancient grudge break to new mutiny" (Act I, Sc. 1). Conflicts, more often than not, end in tragedies. Romeo and Juliet having many conflicts, has also ended in a terrible tragedy, the death of the lovers. "... a pair of star-crossed lovers take their life..." (Act. I, Sc. I). Even before the play has begun, the prologue expresses one of the conflicts, between the two head families of Verona, the Capulets and Montagues. Other conflicts which arise throughout the play include: status and love, peace and war, love and hate, amongst others. The two conflicts which seem to be prominent are the conflict between the families, and the conflict between youth and age.     For my IOC commentary I have been given the extract from Act 1 scene 5 from the play Romeo and Juliet. This is one of the most famous and important scenes in this play as this is the first time Romeo and Juliet, the two main characters meet. Prior to this scene the audience are made aware that Romeo has no interest in going to the Capulet's party but he only agrees to show to mercutio that there is no one as beautiful as Rosaline, the girl whom Romeo was in love with before he met Juliet. The main characters in the play are developed in this scene. Romeo who appears as a depressed love struck boy turns into a real lover. Juliet who appears to be innocent child who obeys her parents turn into this brave and strong personality. In the beginning of the extract itself we can see that Tybalt is shaking with anger towards Romeo and takes a vow to kill him and so even though there is excitement in the audience that it’s the first meeting of Juliet and Romeo, there is also a sense of underlying doom. Shakespeare uses this to maybe foreshadow the troubles that will occur due to Tybalt in the future. Romeo and Juliet is captivated by Juliet's beauty and immediately falls in love and Rosaline quickly vanishes from his and he declares that he has never been in love before he saw Juliet. Shakespeare does this because he wants to present a powerful and passionate love between his two main characters. At this point however, the audience may wonder if Romeo’s love for Juliet is as insincere as his love for Rosaline. They may think that the ‘love’ which the fickle Romeo feels, is just the lust of a teenage boy who is entranced by another beautiful woman. Shakespeare uses contrast to show how Juliet is astand out beauty by using the simile - "like a rich jewel in ethiope's ears”. Ethiopian people's skin is dark and the rich jewel shines brightly. Shakespeare uses this to show Romeos mood and his infatuation with Juliet’s beauty, to show that Romeo s captivated by her. With this…
