Achievers (rough draft) Albert Einstein quoted, “In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure”. Many students find this quote from Albert Einstein to be very mind powering in one way or another. Being a college student requires some concentration, motivation and sometimes causes frustration in all hopes of the final goal in college which leads to graduation day. However, students either succeed or fail at this goal depending on what kind of college student that they are, because each type of student contains different levels of motivation and determination. Three major categories of college students are under achievers, average achievers and over achievers, which reflects on a student’s first and last priorities. The under achiever students have a different reputation of lacking the motivation and desire to obtain a college degree. There is very little responsibility in these students, they drop classes or often fail. Actually, these individuals are secondary students; they pay for their classes and their books but beyond that, there is very little commitment to success in them. For example, under achievers rarely make it to class and if they do, they sit in the back and do nothing or distract other students. If they turn in work it is either late or not done correctly. These kind of students rarely pass their courses, but if they do, it is with low grades and minimal knowledge gained. This can be linked to past failures, problems at home, maybe thinking friends are more important or even just not wanting to try. There is very little understating of why students choose to be an under achiever. Unlike the under achiever, the average achievers try to obtain a college degree with the basic requirements. They work hard when they want to just to pass their classes. This category sums up the majority of students in college. A lot of students find the move from high school to college very arduous. They struggle with more hours being put into homework. Most students coming straight out of high school do not know how to manage their time with school and life. However, average achievers work hard regularly in completing and submitting assignments on time. For instance, studying for a test is on the list of things to do for an average achiever but it is not a priority. These students often find their grades in a C or B- range. I’m guilty at times of falling in this category. For example, if I had an assignment that I liked such as, women in the military, I would try my best on it because it is something that I really enjoy. But if it is something that I do not like, I would complete it without trying my best, and just for a passing grade. Teachers will often work hard to motivate average achievers because they display a good work ethic and encouraged by someone else other than their parents. The most successful type of college students are the over achievers. They are well known to college professors as the students who actively strive for success and go above and beyond a professor’s expectation. These students work consistently, hard, continuously and desire to learn more. These students are often pushing themselves to exceed their own goals as well. They do not like to fail at anything, and they hunger for knowledge. Over achievers often consult their professors on many class related issues; these students seek guidance from their professor and perfection from themselves. For example, over achievers tend to live in libraries as they are always studying, doing homework and helping others. However, the over achievers success in college does have its downfalls, as their hobby for academic perfection often lessens their social experience associated with being a college student. Regardless, this means nothing to the over achievers, who seek to exceed in education as their fundamental goal. The word failure is not in an over achievers dictionary. In conclusion, an overview of the entire college student body, under, average and over achievers tend to be the three categories that consistently characterize college students. These categories make out the students levels of motivation and determination in obtaining the highest grade & brightest future possible. Which category do you fall into?

It is a well-known fact in today’s world that a large percentage of students in college are failing their classes due to the fact that many of them are not worried about making good grades. “Students will float to the mark you set,” said Mike Rose (Rose 110). Every day students are being held to a lower standard. Not only does this happen at school, but in the home life as well. Today’s generation seems to have a lot of things done for them. We just hand out A’s, and allowance that hasn’t even been earned. From these poor examples being set for us, we lose the motive and drive that it takes to succeed. People are going through life with a sense that they are owed something.…

Today, many students like myself all over the America have walked down the hectic aisles of high school and have sat in some of the largest lecture halls in college. As kids, we were somewhat taught that going to school and getting an education would be the key to our success and thought that if we didn’t fulfill these expectations, we would end up homeless and live a terrible life. For so many years during my educational career this was the mentality that I believed in. Although this may be over exaggerated, I believe that this may hold some truth to the many college students all over the world. It is almost like we volunteer to go into debt and deal with all the stress that a college education brings us because we feel like it will get us…

What does college success me to me? To me it means a lot of things such as graduating with at least a B average without dropping out or failing any of my classes but most importantly it means that I walked away with something important. If you fail, you are still successful as long as you know that you tried your best, and did whatever it took to get there even if you didn’t fully succeed. Success is getting everything you want or need in life by working your hardest and trying your best and not doing anything meaningless. When all the goals that I had set for myself have been fulfilled, then I can say that my time at college was truly a success. College success means to me more than just grades in college, it also means that I used my time wisely and took my education seriously, trying the hardest I possibly could, and being productive. Trying to get as much knowledge I can get out of it so I can apply it to day to day issues or work being done . You gain experience in a lot of different stuff. You want to know what your field contains and you want to have the full college experience. The reason I why I am attending college here at NOVA is because so I can get a good education and a transfer to 4 year college to finish my college education. While I am getting an education, I want to obtain a degree so I can be able to obtain a good paying job that I know and will enjoy doing for the rest of my life. That is my take on college…
