Achebes Biography
Chinua Achebe was born in 1930; he is a Nigerian novelist and poet, and he is generally acknowledged as the father of the African novel. Chinua Achebe was born in Ogidi in Nigeria; he is the child of Isaiah Okafor Achebe, a teacher in a missionary school, and Janet Ileogbunam. His parents taught him many of the values of their traditional Igbo culture, and it is not surprising that they reflect even in his works. In 1944 Chinua Achebe went to Government College in Umuahia. Like other major Nigerian writers including Elechi Amadi, Wole Soyinka, John Pepper Clark, John Okigbo, and Cole Omotso, he was also attended the University College of Ibadan, where he studied English, History and Theology. In 1953 he graduated with a BA, before joining the Nigerian Broadcasting Service (NBS, later changed to Nigerian Broadcasting Corporarion, or NBC) in Lagos. In 1954 he travelled in Africa and America, and laboured for a short time as a teacher at a local school in Oba.
Likewise, for a period in the 1960s he was the director of External Services in control of the Voice of Nigeria. His participation in the things that concerns Nigeria helps him to be able to relate the African experience to the world. He also shows his, support for Biafra in the Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970), working for the government as an ambassador. In 1967 Achebe co-founded the publishing company Citadell Press at Enugu with Christopher Okigbo, a gifted poet and close family friend. Besides, Okigbo joined the army and was killed in action in August 1967, and the operation of the press was concluded. As a result, Achebe's writings from this period echo his deep personal disappointment with what Nigeria became since independence. Also, his pregnant wife suffered a miscarriage, and Achebe himself narrowly escaped death. Achebe returned to the war years through his writing and discusses their effect consequence. In the 1990s Achebe taught literature to undergraduates at Bard College, a liberal arts school,

Achebe 's goal as a writer was to depict his people. He learned about his own people, who were once a part of the Igbo civilization by "interviewing older people and reading the writings of colonial administration missionaries" ("Short Stories for Students Volume" pg. 17). Once the civil war began, he decided to shift gears, from writing novels, and focus on poetry and short stories, which one is "Civil Peace." Achebe was born in 1930 in a village in eastern Nigeria. His father worked for a Church Missionary Society. Achebe 's early education was through the society 's school, Achebe began learning English at the age of 8 (Wikipedia pg. 1). Antonio Church March 21, 2013 Things Fall Apart Analysis The purpose of this paper is to provide the audience with my analysis of Chinua Achebe’s “Things Fall Apart.” I am going to start off by explaining the setting of the book. I feel that these types of facts are important to the story in making it readable to the audience. If you understand where and when the story is taking place, you will get a good understanding of what the story is actually symbolizing. Once I finish that, I am going to discuss some of the key characters in the book along with some of the problems they faced. After that, I plan to fully analyze Chinua Achebe’s book that includes key themes, maybe some important symbols that make you dig deeper into the point of the book itself. This also includes the decisions of the main character that lead to rising action and/or falling action in the book. This is pretty much the meaning behind the book and helps the reader understand what the author wanted us, as readers, to know as far as the main point of writing about the subject he or she chose. Then I am going to end it off with an ending statement of what I actually thought about the book summarizing what was talked about previously. Chinua Achebe’s, “Things Fall Apart”, take place in the lower villages of Nigeria, Africa. Further reading states these could possibly be the villages of Mbanta, Iguedo, and Umuofia (where it is most of the time) in the time period of the 1890s. The setting shows that the story could be about an African successor of some sort before even starting to read. The setting also sets the narrator’s tone for the story. It seems, by reading on, that the narrator is or was possibly a native of the villages by the way he talked and discussed…
