Acetanilide Synthesis
Summary of Results: The objective of the experiment was to turn a sample compound from impure to pure. The impure substance that was given to the students was Acetanilide. The impure sample given weighed approximately 1.59 grams. After a series of hot and ice-cold filtrations, the pure (Acetanilide) compound weighed 0.70 grams. Approximately 44.02% of the sample was pure Acetanilide.
After recording the weight in the lab manual, the melting point range was tested. The melting point range for the pure sample of Acetanilide was found to be 116C-117.5C. The pure sample began to melt at 116C. The sample was fully melted at the temperature of 117.5C.
Discussion:
One of the possible errors that could have occurred in the experiment was adding

For the separation of sucrose, we weighed out 3.048g of Panacetin onto a filter, and 50 mL of dichloromethane in a graduated cylinder. Then we transferred both the panacetin and dichloromethane into an Erlenmeyer flask and stirred it until the panacetin was dissolved. We let it dry by gravity and set it aside to dry. The filter paper weighed about 1.320g and sucrose weighed out at 1.028g. Sucrose also ended up on the outside rim of the filter paper. We then proceed to separate the aspirin. We measured 30mL of NaHCO3 and mixed it with 7mL of 6M HCl. We drained the organic layer into a pre-weighed Erlenmeyer flask and save it for recovery of acetanilide. We took the combined aqueous extracts in an…

The purpose of this experiment is to determine the boiling point of a liquid and the melting point of a solid. It is useful to know the melting point and boiling point of a substance to identify whether it is pure or not. I could learn how to determine the melting and boiling point of a substance through its temperature when the acetamide turned into a liquid and bubbles emerged from the capillary tube in the Isopropyl alcohol.…

This whole experiment is based on purifying and then finding the melting point of the unknown compound. The theory is that if a substance is pure, it will have a very specific melting point, within one or two degrees Celsius. This is in opposition to a mixed, or contaminated substance, which will have a broad melting range. Therefore, when we mix our unknown with samples of phenacetin and acetanilide, whichever mixture has a more accurate melting point will tell us what our unknown is. It is also important to make sure that the resulting melting points are close to what the proven melting points of the substances are. The lab manual tells us that acetanilide should melt at approximately 114 degrees Celsius and phenacetin should melt at around 134 degrees Celsius.…

Pre-Lab: Analgesic drugs are known for reducing pain, while antiseptic drugs reduce symptoms such as fevers and swelling. However, some of these drugs can reduce both illnesses. To obtain a pure compound in these drugs, the scientist needs to separate the desired compound by taking advantage of the different physical and chemical properties. Such as; different boiling points, melting points and their solubility properties. To do this a chemist can also asses the differences between acidic and basic substances when they are added to water soluble mixtures. Within this current experiment I will asses the pharmaceutical preparation of Panacetin, by using it 's solubility along with other organic molecules. We know that Panacetin is made up of sucrose, aspirin and some other unknown substance. We know the substance has to be Phenacetin or Acetanilide. To help solidify our reasoning, we need a % recovery of 8-12% sucrose, 35-45% aspirin and 45-55% unknown.…

The electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction is the attack of a benzene ring on an electrophilic species resulting in the substitution of a proton with a functional group. The electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction nitration is used to nitrate methyl benzoate and acetanilide with a nitronium ion. Crystallization was used to purify the product. The melting point was used to determine its purity and the regiochemistry of the products. The methyl benzoate reaction product, methyl nitrobenzoate, was determined to be meta-substituted and the acetanilide reaction product, nitroacetanilide, was determined to be para-substituted.…

As stated previously the purpose of this experiment was primarily based on about chemical changes. Many chemical changes are viewed through a screen, or read from a book. In this experiment, chemical changes are viewed directly from the eyes of the scientist. The procedure first begins by gathering all needed materials. Next, laying the first powder on four wells, followed by the next powders, each powder was placed on four wells. The liquids were then placed on each powder using the four droppers. Three drops of each liquids were placed on each powder. After observing the chemical reactions, and recording data the powders were then identified.…

A hot water bath was prepared in a fume hood using a 250-mL beaker. 2.5 g of p-acetamidobenzenesulfonyl chloride was placed into a 50 mL Erlenmeyer flask and 11 mL of dilute ammonium hydroxide solution was added to it. The mixture was stirred with a glass stirring rod. The mixture was heated in the hot water bath (70C) for 10 minutes and stirred occasionally. The flask was allowed to cool and placed in an ice water bath for 15 minutes. The p-acetamidobenzenesulfonamide was collected on a Buchner funnel and the flask was rinsed with about 10 mL of ice water. The sold was then transferred to a 25 mL round bottom flask and 5.3 mL of dilute hydrochloric acid was added along with a boiling stone. A reflux condenser was attached to the flask and the mixture was heated using a heating mantle until the solid had dissolved. The solution was then refluxed for an additional 5 minutes. Next, the mixture was allowed to cool to room temperature. Using a Pasteur pipet, the solution was transferred to a 100 mL beaker. While stirring with a glass rod, aqueous saturated sodium bicarbonate was added dropwise to the mixture. This was done until the pH measure between 4 and 6. The mixture was cooled in an ice water bath. The sulfanilamide was collected on a Buchner funnel and rinsed with 5 mL of cold water. The solid was air dried on the Buchner funnel using suction and then placed in a drawer to dry for a week. The next week the sulfanilamide was weighed and the melting point was measured.…

The goal of this lab is to synthesize a sample of acetylsalicylic acid, otherwise known as aspirin. This is the most important goal of the lab. This, however, has side goals that go along with the main one. One is finding the percent yield of the synthesis. Another is measuring the melting point of the aspirin sample, which will in turn indicate the purity of the sample. The last is conducting a colorimetric analysis on the aspirin sample.…
